Research on what Singapore has done to help the elderly (Medifund)

Medifund
Medifund is an endowment fund set up by the Government to help needy Singaporeans. Medifund is a safety net for patients who face financial difficulties with their remaining bills after receiving Government subsidies and drawing on other means of payments including MediShield Life/Integrated Plans, Medisave and cash. Set up in April 1993 with an initial capital of $200 million, the Government will inject capital sum into the fund from time to time, e.g. when budget surpluses are available. The interest income generated from the capital sum is used to provide financial assistance for healthcare bills.

Eldershield

ElderShield, introduced in September 2002, is an affordable severe disability insurance scheme designed to help Singaporeans meet with expenses incurred in the event of severe disability. ElderShield premiums can be paid with Medisave or cash.

CNS

The PGO, which will reach out to those aged 65 and above, will be renamed the Silver Generation Office to reflect its new, enhanced role.the Pioneer Generation Office (PGO) will merge with the AIC and become its outreach arms in implementing the Community Network for Seniors (CNS) initiative.

Our experience in completing this project is that we learnt more about the elderly and how they felt that Singapore has a great healthcare system, where they are well taken care of.
We have faced some issues on time management, since we have a difficult time trying to find time to meet up to do some parts of the project. We also had difficulty in finding people to interview.

3. The group project had increased our knowledge and interests on issues that affects Singapore because we did not encounter or understand more on this issue. For example, we get to experience what the elderly's living conditions are in one room flats since we have never been to these areas, so it really brings a perspective of how privileged we actually are.

Ziling
1. felt that our team worked hard together to complete this project in spite of our different and busy schedules. We also learnt a lot about the elderly when doing this project .
2. Because of our different schedules, we did not have many chances to meet up, plan and discuss how we were going to carry out this project. We coukd only discuss through our phones, which led to some miscommunications but we clarified it eventually. We distributed our work evenly and everyone contributed.
3. Yes. My knowledge about the elderly has increased, for example the issues that they face and the about the government's efforts to help the elderly. I feel that this is very important as Singapore, and many oymther parts of the worls are facing a "greying tsunami". This has inspired me to try and help the elderly more, starting from my own grandparents

Yu Li
Some challenges we faced are due to time constraints as we each have different time schedules and it’s hard to accommodate to each other’s timings. However, with mutual understanding, we learnt to help out one other with their assigned task in the project when we’re done with our own part. This group project has definitely increased my knowledge on Singapore’s healthcare benefits towards elderly.
