Homophonic Texture Video Example: https://youtu.be/LRP8d7hhpoQ?si=GRpl7Cf159KiFCeY

Pentatonix (Musical Pop)- Hallelujah (Official Video)-2016

I picked this example because this group represents homophonic texture all throughout the song. They harmonize and sing together as one as they make the sound of different instruments. In this song, you can hear all of the people vocalizing but together, the sound of all of them sounds like great harmony as one great big noise. Right around the forty second mark, you can hear their harmony as one.

One sound or melody is played by multiple instruments at the same time. Homophonic texture is where multiple notes are played but they are based around only one sound. It focuses on the sound the group of people or instruments make rather than focusing on how one individual noise sounds.

-John Williams

-20th Century

Our book gives us the Star Wars music as an example of homophonic. There is a very clear melody accompanied by a choir of instruments and chords of harmony. It is between lower and upper brass. I think Star Wars gives a clear example of representation of the homophonic texture, especially with how many people have heard of this piece, they can have some understanding of homophonic texture.

Heterophonic texture is a musical texture that occurs when multiple variations of a single melody line are played simultaneously across different voices. The variations can range from small embellishments to longer runs in a single voice.

-By Robert Joyce

-1800s

I feel like this song really gives people an idea of what heterophonic texture sounds like. It is a good example as it includes each instrument playing the same melody but embellishes it slightly with softer notes and vibrato. So there are many different instruments playing but there is one melody.

Ragtime and dixieland jazz is a very good representation of heterophonic texture and has various leitmotifs throughout the different music and pieces. This type of music involves multiple variations of the same melody played simultaneously across different voices. Ragtime is primarily a solo piano style and Dixieland is oriented toward group playing.
