He was separated from his mother right after he was born, he was also taken from his grandmother at the age of 6. When Frederick was 12 years old the wife of his owner broke the rules and taught him to read and write. He then taught other slaves to read at Sunday school. At the age of 16 Frederick Douglas was sent to work for covey known as a “slave breaker”. Slave breakers like covey were especially cruel to slaves. Douglass was whipped regularly. During one harsh beating, Frederick fought back. As a current fugitive he and his wife decided to move to New Bedford, Massachusetts where the last name of Douglass. He began speaking in anti- slavery about his terrible circumstances of being a slave. 

He became orator, and started travelling. In 1845, Douglass wrote his first autobiography which allows the responder to infer the life of a slave. The announcement of his book made the fugitive to become aware of his presence to the government. 

He decided that to prevent a risk to his family he fled overseas. There he gave many speeches and sold more copies of his narratives in the United Kingdom. 

Other abolitionists offered to purchase his freedom and he accepted, allowing him come back to the United States as a free man. When he came back his worked followed different paths, supporting women's rights movement, helped people on the Underground Railroad, and supported anti-slavery political parties. 

He created a newspaper called ‘the North Star’ and created a second autobiography to project his movement being an end to racial segregation.

Fredrick even put his own sons in the war a voluntary infantry. He also helped protest to allow equal money to be given to all races.
