This quote introduces a recurring theme of Kathy seeing some kind of boundary or "line" on the horizon. This represents how Kathy is trapped by her environment, but she doesn't even realize it -- she doesn't realize what freedom is or how to achieve it. The book will end with a kind of "line" in the distance as well.

I gain nostalgia about many things, both good and bad. I remember some of the worst times, and feel nostalgic despite how much I know it would suck. But, it made the situation less bad in my head. Usually, when I feel anything negative such as sorrow or anger, in the moment I want to soak in that experience as much as possible. I love to feel it, I want to understand why I’m reacting this way and I’d rather die than distract myself or feel better. After the situation is over, however, I don’t mind reminiscing the time but prefer not to. However, if the period was long enough, then I do enjoy feeling some sense of nostalgia for it. It could make bad experiences seem better, and really shift our perspective and feel better about current situations which may be dwelling on us. Oftentimes, I think, “In the future I’ll feel better, I might even enjoy thinking about this.”

This quote demonstrated that in Kathy’s job as a carer, her previous place of education still plays a role in her job. In previous pages of the book it was shown that in a persons third or fourth donation meant they were getting close to completion which ultimately meant they were close to death. The school of Hailsham is well known by people and seems to be sought after, so with this person being close to death I found it interesting that this was something brought up by them at this moment.

I agree with Landon Arias and I wanted to add that the students were much younger at the time and they took less things seriously. Maturity played a big part in the development of them. I understood the comment about being told and not told things. In the book the students are just forced to accept certain things that shouldn’t be accepted. To Landon’s question I feel that their education Hailsham might’ve went through everything they did with the students education to keep the reputation of the school. I feel this school leans a lot in perspectives of people. Round 1: One thing that I agree with is that the students have been told like what the guardians have planned for them in the future, but like they never really paid attention to that topic. Because in the book it gets into more detail of how they have been told but like the kids have never really accepted it or more like never really payed attention to it. Kathy is kind of like the one who has payed more attention when it comes to this topic because she kind of questions it a little in the book. While in the movie it’s kind of like they have never really talked about this topic.

I agree with the class topic because they are giving us classes that like don’t end up helping us in our future. I can slightly disagree with the conversation concerning school/grades and our future. I do think that’s grades can matter, and are probably the best way to measure our skill on memory and our ability to understand things in order. It wouldn‘t make sense to allow someone who takes longer to grasp concepts or reads slower, to be a healthcare professional. Truth of the matter is, we all have dreams. But if we cannot keep up, then we shouldn‘t be apart of it or else everything would be chaotic. Unless, we go to magnet schools to specialize in the career we want, then by all means that‘s wonderful.

Also, the idea that school should only teach things which are REQUIRED for our future successes is absurd. I agree, we should learn of things which prepare for us to become functioning adults and classes on auto-repair and finances and credit should be optional. But it‘s obnoxious to complain about being required to learn math and reading and such. If we only cared about education because it teaches us about inevitable things like tax paying and purchasing real estate, then society would lose its grip on intelligence. Knowledge is the biggest privilege we have as young people in a rich country, and everyone complains about it.

Education should not define us as people, but it definitely should limit some of us to our careers because we would want doctors and lawyers and mechanics to know what they‘re doing, we don‘t want people who process information slower because business would collapse and everyone‘s problems would only grow.

Ruth and Kathy’s relationship changed at first from ruined to slightly better. When Kathy found out that Ruth was lying about where she got the pencil case from, the confrontation caused a surprised reaction and stress because she thought about her reputation and relationships with other students and how they would be ruined. Soon after, their relationship became slightly better due to the Kathy’s efforts to make it up to Ruth in small ways.

I agree with what Basil said on how Kathy and Tommy will get together, and Ruth will get mad but eventually understand. It goes along with what I said about how Ruth is more of a despised character but later on in the book we will feel empathetic for her. This is even hinted at in the book when some of Kathy’s friend say that she is the next in line after Tommy and Ruth broke up.

I had a question and comment I would’ve liked to share and it was on page 100 I’m not sure but Kathy reflects on Madames reaction to the students when she sees them as if they’re spiders. My question was what do you think this reaction reveals about how the outside world views the hailsham students? And I feel like it’s fear and discomfort the outside world feels toward them. Also I think the students are still seen as different and less human because they have different thoughts as others.

I agree that when madame cried from Kathy’ dancing that it made see her see as person and just someone that is going to be a career. This is because madame was terrified of the students, but I guess now that she sees how they see things makes her feel a little bad.

I agree with the idea of the art being something to do with the career/future they will have. Whether it’s being a donor or carer. Based on what we know Tommy is a donor and he wasn’t creative. Through Miss Lucy’s talk with Tommy it shows that drawings have something to do with his future.

Wondering where Hailsham is and the idea if people don’t agree with the ideals of Hailsham

I think it is something to think about, and also my own question is if these kids have parents or if there’s a reason to why people aren’t able to find and locate Hailsham. And whether people find it to be morally wrong depends on if people really knew the truth about it.

I feel that the students should rebel and most likely would rebel but if they tried once getting to the outside world no one would believe them simply for the reason that it seems Hailsham students cannot retrace and go back to Hailsham. It’s also possible that the outside world as the guardian call it are in on the school of Hailsham and are working with them possibly somewhat like a social experiment.

I disagree with the comment about Kathy being more likely to be a leader. I agreed with the comment about Ruth being more likely to be a leader. I think that Ruth has more of an outgoing personality and would be a good leader. However, she is controlling sometimes, that may be a good quality for being a leader.

I disagree that most people would rebel against Hailsham because most are benefiting from it with the organ donations. They don’t have much power, or care, or are scared to speak up if they thing this is wrong.

I don’t think the world knows about Hailsham. If people realized they were children, they would not be donating organs. I agree that the author wants us to think about child labor and child trafficking. There is no set scene on where Hailsham is located at.

I agree that there’s something more to the artwork and that they’re just not telling the kids what it’s used for or how it’s beneficial. The artwork might determine if someone is a carer or a donor based on talent and creativity.

I think that Amira could’ve been more prepared when she was gonna ask a question about the pencil case but didn’t know where she actually had the question. When she connected how Hailsham students aren’t being told the truth and separated from the world to the child labor in the real world she did very well and sort of redeemed herself.

I agree with Kyo on how we get these really delicious, cheap, and worldwide chocolate but it is harvested by all these kid in Africa for cheap labor. Like eventhough we say that it’s wrong, we the people still buy this chocolate because it’s everywhere and on how cheap it is.

I agree that Hailsham is very hidden. If someone caught Hailsham, it would be shut down. It’s clear it’s not know about Hailsham and it takes place in the middle of nowhere because no one in their right mind would let this kind of activity towards using kids as organ donors take place.
