The DDSB has a Transition Coordinator Team that helps create IEPs that are more tailored to the student's goals in terms of education, work, and daily life. They also help get students and parents connected to community partners for appropriate work placements for the students.

Sometimes building independence in students looks like "doing less". While it may be easier and more productive in the moment to help students complete their work, creating independence also means giving students the opportunity to work on their own, even though it will likely translate to less work being done or less quality of work done.

One of the barriers identified with student independence in the classroom is a lack of note-taking skills. In my experience as a student and a teacher, note-taking skills are explicitly taught and emphasized, especially in middle school years. Maybe some accommodations for students with exceptionalities such as copies of notes or skeleton notes can contribute to poor note-taking skills.
