I am afraid the healthy linguistic diet model does not address issues like linguistic imperialism, hidden curriculum and globalisation; as a model it is promising but in foreign language research and teaching/learning practices things are not so "neat and tidy". Still I may try a couple of interesting ideas in my English classes.

The multiple realities and experiences are undoubtedly an asset for learning. No context should be devalued, but the exchange of knowledge should be privileged, even if in multiple languages and/or languages. The secret of success is, without a doubt, sharing.
In an Erasmus+ experience, a colleague had been doing it for years and we were challenged to sing happy birthday, each one in their own language. It was so much fun, motivating and exciting. To repeat, with the students...

My school context is not that diverse, but we do have some migrant students, even though most of them come from countries sharing the same L1.

Preventing languages from dying in this globalised world is a daunting task. But I think languages and even dialects should be passed on to the new generations, since they convey some cultural aspects that make us unique, such as idioms and phrases that are common just in a particular region or lifestyle.

If students learn a new language or some phrases for fun, to be excentric or have an interesting topic in conversations, to broaden their horizons and thus become world citizens, all these reasons are valid and help preserve some part of our culture from extinction.

This model is new to me and I have a lot to learn. In my school there are some foreign students and integration is one of the aim of our curriculum. I am Erasmus+ Ambassador in Italy and eTwinning projects can help students to learn more about other European or world countries. Collaborative activities created for the projects are important when languages and other traditions are shared among participants. One year, during European Day of Languages activities my students learnt to say some sentences in Greek and viceversa... it was really fun but it was a way to share, accept, understand... Here is one of the videos...
https://youtu.be/jNLLiwNhwV4

The HLDM is a new concept to me. I will have to make a deeper research about it and only after that, will I feel more comfortable to talk about it. But, from what I have learnt until now, it's mandatory that a new approach concerning multiculturalism/ plurilingualism is introduced in schools. I just have a few students that came from Venezuela and it has not been easy to teach them English. We really need to provide them a better integration, so that everything gets easier to them. Some of the suggestions given in this course seem quite intertesting. I will probably start by the Babel Tower Day with a few changes, of course.

As a teacher of English Language and Culture I have always encouraged linguistic diversity. All languages can enrich our world, our society, our way of looking at ourselves and others. This is not a new vision but something that has always existed and that some of us have always fostered and encouraged. Nowadays with migration fluxes it has become paramount to consciously consider a pedagogy which should take into account this and other multilingual approaches.

As I see it, it is a very powerful strategy to get children attention and also, to get a more significant learning for my students because it makes them important (as a teacher it is very important to take in account their needs and interests). By this way, children get to know and realise that multilingualism and multiculturalism exist what allow them to develop many principles such as respect or empathy.

I think that it is really important to acknowledge and promote linguistic diversity in our classroom.
Considering the school contexts where I taught during these three years (I'm a special ed. Teacher), three different Secondary Schools in Milan and near Milan, I think that it would be crucial to develop subject teachers' awareness about this topic. Lessons are often "conducted" using only one language, Italian, the target language spoken by the majority of the students and teachers as their L1. All teachers, especially pre-primary, primary and secondary teachers, should become aware of the value of code-switching, translaguaging, code-mixing and translation activities.
Maybe some of the key-concepts developed and analysed by socio-linguists nowdays, might become part of every teacher's toolbox.
Having said that, I think that the acceptance and the adoption of a HLD model in our classrooms, a model that allow to aknowledge the value of biligualism and pluringualism, is necessary and it can be integrated in every other teaching metodology: traditional lessons, Experential Based learning, cooperative learning, CLIL lessons, debates, etc.
I also think that Italian Schools should also offer some extra-courses that allow students with different linguistic and cultural backgrounds to develop their linguistic competences, studying their "standard L1", especially considering extra-european languages.
These courses would give these students the opportunity to become more proficient in their L1, ensuring and enhancing their linguistic competence with huge cognitive advantages. At the same time, they might be also attended by their italian classmates and teachers, promoting linguistic and intercultural competences.

On several occasions, I have involved students' languages when asking for the way a particular word or expression is said in their languages. I teach at the pre-primary school and I’ve worked on the project during the last two years, with five and three year old children. It was a very important opportunity for both teachers and students. HLD model is not only a way to approach different and unknown languages. It gives you the chance to broaden your point of view on your and others’ culture. Plurilingualism pedagogy represents the occasion to reflect and foster the idea of a global society, where Humans are at the center, and everyone can feel welcomed and respected in one’s own Identity.
Silvana Ferrari

This is my first approach to HLD model. We don't have to forget the difference between being bilingual o being billiterate, which means that you can use the language, but you're not fully bilingual. In my opinion, students' background is a key condition to acquire a new language. Unfortunately, in my last 5 years as a teacher, I didnt' have the opportunity to practice my previous knowledge, because my school was placed in a very close neighbourhood with no immigrant students. My students' weren't very interested in learning other languages, so my coworkers and I had to make so many adjustments to teach foreign languages in an engaging way.

We are increasingly living in a multicultural and therefore multilingual society. For all of us to share and enjoy equal opportunities, effective communication is essential. As a teacher, communication is the key for a good job, so linguistic diversity should be seen as something that generates innovation and growth and not as a problem. The Healthy Language Diet model is another opportunity/tool to overcome dificulties and improve integration and learning. It is not always easy, but the result is very satisfying.

Thank you: you’ve facilitated my first introduction to the HLD model, and it has been groundbreaking! 😊

From the recognition of the role of multilingualism in intellectual development and mental health, to the idea that the speaker is freed from the native-like language acquisition, or even the perspective that migrants might be looked at as added value instead of a “problem”, though simple or maybe even obvious ideas, can be, at the same time, revolutionary. At least, they are for me.

From students to teachers, from parents to school staff, I can see lots of contexts to implement this model, trying to step away from the dangers of the “single story” and helping everyone take care of their own health. Several ways to share the multiple languages/cultures that inhabit our school have come to mind, I hope I can make one of them clear in my lesson plan…

I'm really honoured to have been one of the teachers of the three schools selected for the pilot project "HLD in Italy". I had the opportunity to get in touch with the Healthy Linguistic Diet concept for the first time and to apply what I've learnt in the last two years in three of my six classes with children from 11 to 14. Our students with different home languages were the protagonists of the learning process in all its steps and we all had a meaningful experience, leaning such important values as respect for people with different cultural backgrounds, the great dignity of all languages, the importance of intercultural dialogue. This project has represented more than a learning methodology. It has been a precious occasion to reflect on our attitude towards non native speakers in our classes. HLD has empowered them and has changed our teaching and learning routines, deepening and widening our perspectives in school education. In a plurilingual classroom, as well as in a multicultural society, no one must be left behind!

Prior to this first year in Italy, I had only heard about translanguaging but had never had any real experience with it. I am teaching at a European School and we are putting this model into practice; in fact, our schools are based on it and were established on this principle. I suddenly feel very lucky. I am coming from having taught in Lavia for four years and though society there is largely multilingual, it happened as a result of forced political aggression and with the active threats against the Baltics and the Russian aggression/war in Ukraine, there is a growing tendency to strengthen our national reserves, including culture and language. Also, I myself was born and educated in the US, where monolingualism is the norm and there is active pushback against people daring to speak in other languages in public. I whole-heartedly applaud and feel fortunate to be a part of this education system and the European turning of the tide, leading the way for acceptance of multilingualism and pluralinguilism and recognizing that monolingualism and/or globalization of one language creates a dominance that is unwarranted. This should be the norm in all educational institutions.

It's the first time I've heard of the HLD model, but it makes sense. All the schools I've worked so far hardly had diversity at all, in terms of nationality and language. The region where I live hardly has inmigration, compared to the rest of Spain. But the world and societies walk in that direction. So we can't be unaware! In fact, so far I've had the feeling, the school has worked as just the opposite,in some sense, the tool that has made us all the same, which can be good. But not in this case. I bet the school in many cases has made us all speak English, has made us all use uniform, and so on, so we look alike, speak alike... I mean, things have been tradicionally like this. But this needs a change. Nowadays teachers should put into value the difference, make it obvious within the class and appreciate it. So that many students feel they fit, no matter their origins, and are important to the new community thanks to those origins, so the rest can learn new things from new places, cultures, etc. I hope to be able to put all this into practice.

I was totally unaware of the "Healthy linguistic Diet" but during my 20 years of teaching I've always been interested in enhancing the presence of children and families with different languages and culture: I've involved some mothers from Poland and Morocco in class in order to give my pupils and me some information about their culture and teach simple songs and rhimes; in addition to it, I use the eTwinning platform to plan projects among foreign schools so, whatever the topics are, we always involve elements from the culture and language of the classes involved. My pupils are always extremely interested and curious about this issue, I'll be certainly deepen the HLD issue.
