She was the daughter of Zeus and Demeter. Zeus was the ruler of the sky while Demeter was the ruler of the earth, agriculture, and fertility. Myths have told that Hermes (God of trade, wealth, luck, travel, etc. and also Zeus messenger) had found out about this abduction and was able to make a deal with Hades. He told him that if Persephone ate no food from him, Persephone would be returned to her mother Demeter. But Persephone was tricked into eating a seed of pomegranate and was only allowed to go to the upper world on half of a year. Myths have said that every time Persephone goes up into to the upper world her return is celebrated by the famous Eleusinian Mysteries performed at the sanctuary of Demeter at Eleusis. This all occured in the ninth century and before that the 8th century persephone had been known as the Queen of the Underworld.
