This can be used a lot during ELA when it comes to reading but also when introducing a new topic such as photosynthesis or The Three Branches of government. This allows all students to talk and saves time that a teacher would use typically to ask one student a question then receive an answer. The students will then have to consider what links to the topic and how those ideas relate. This allows them to show what they know and the correlation between ideas as well, plus students really enjoy getting to draw/map out their thoughts. I would use concept maps for a lot of things like building on a topic or introducing a completely new concept. I would try and ask a question about that day's lesson, and some more questions on whatever I was going to do to build on it over the next few days to show me what I really needed to teach.
