He wanted to find out where birds went in the cold seasons, and if the same birds came back, so he tied a string to a leg on each of the baby birds while the parents were away. When the warm season came back, he saw that to birds were at the nest, but no strings, so he checked for more nests, and found multiple nests with birds that had strings tied to their legs. He discovered many things and became famous for his pictures and methods.
