During my last semester, I took the Mental Health First Aid 7 weeks course where I learned about different mental health illnesses and how to respond to them as mental health first aider. One week we focused on postpartum depression and watched different scenarios of people who experienced postpartum depression but did not have any resources for help. I found that course very authentic because I was able to relate to that as I had experienced postpartum depression after the birth of my first daughter, but I was not familiar with mental health and, nobody in my family was sure about that. The whole experience of that course was authentic such as role-play scenarios, creating dialogues, and sharing our own experiences made learning very authentic.

In elementary school, my peers and I had to conduct individual science experiments of our choice and present our findings at a schoolwide science fair. We were aloud, however, to brainstorm ideas with each other. The fair took place after school, and families, teachers, and other members of the community attended!

I had an authentic learning experience in my senior year of high school. For our winter project, we were put into groups to design a bridge made out of popsicle sticks that could carry a certain amount of weight and we were challenged to come up with our own design ideas, but based on engineering and use of our mathematic skills. It was challenging, but it was helpful to work in a group, because we all had different strengths that contributed to the success of the project.

A time where I experienced an authentic learning environment was when over the summer I was leading reading camps and brought a bunch of kids and youth together to the community center's garden and have the owners describe the processes of tending to the gardens, how they built it, and even had some kids bring some vegetables home with them.

I remember in elementary school, in one of my math classes we were put into groups to work on a project for a couple classes. In this project, we had to create a 3D town. In our town, we had the freedom to include whatever we thought was necessary in a city. I remember how fun it was to work with our friends, include all that we wanted, and be urban planners for the week.

Federicka - My most authentic learning experiences was putting what we learned in a textbook/lesson and applying it to real life scenarios. This allowed me to really understand the material and see the importance for it. In middle school, we did a day of Ellis Island, we were assigned a person and the country we were coming from and acted like we were coming to Ellis Island. Different classrooms were different stations, such as doctor or arrival. Next, we also had a make day where we made goods and "sold" them. This showed economics, but in a more fun way! i will forever remember these amazing memories. It actually made me understand the material better.

An authentic learning experience I had was in 3rd grade when we had to create our own products and advertise our own products. When the time came to sell our products, we had to make sure our product was selling and if it wasn't we had to think of what we could do to sell our product. I learned many things from this experience as I learned about entrepreneurship and how to use money especially when saving and spending. It truly was an authentic learning experience because we learned how to solve problems like those faced by people in the world outside of school.

-Leslie Munoz

I always had difficulty with reading. Therefore, one authentic learning experience was in my fifth grade class my teacher would always take extra time with me. She would encourage me to stay with her during lunch at times to read to her. She also would read with my during independent reading time. This helped me a lot because she was able to see I was struggling and took extra time out of her time and day to work with me and help better a skill of mine. I still remember the impact it had on me until today because it genuinely helped me as a reader and student overall. - Soma Kochany

An authentic experience that I can remember is a time in 5th grade that my teacher allowed a small group of students to create a new club. It has been so long that I cannot remember the name of the club but basically, we took it upon ourselves to completely renovate the outside garden. We dug up all of the old plants and planted tomatoes, cucumber, and some herbs. Everything that we harvested from the school garden we would give to the lunch ladies in the kitchen. From there, the lunch ladies would teach us small recipes and we would use the ingredients that we harvest in the recipes. With this experience, I learned leadership, collaboration, and it taught us about sustainability.

In high school, we had to do a big question project. The question could be related to whatever we wanted, and we would go out to collect data, research, and interview people for our project. It allowed for people to focus in on what was important to them, rather than just researching a topic that was assigned by the teacher. -Aisha

In the sixth grade, we did an important project that had to do with culture. I got to pick a country that I wanted, do research on it, present it, and also bring something in for the class to see or eat that had to do with the country that I chose. I chose the country that my parents are from and brought in a dish that was from that country. -Alondra

I remember from my social studies, there was a budge plan PBL. Each student randomly picked given budget and we were told to plan out how much we would use on each category (food, clothes, house, hobbies). For the final project, we made a booklet with pictures from magazine. I thought it was an interesting activity because it did not only cover social studies, but also covered other subjects such as math and language arts.
