Definition according to the article...

Temperament is a set of in-born traits that organize the child’s approach to the world. They are instrumental in the development of the child’s distinct personality. These traits also determine how the child goes about learning about the world around him.

Definition according to the book...

Involves individual differences in behavioral styles, emotions, and characteristic ways of responding

Temperaments vary in all children and can be "good" or "bad" depending on how they are perceived.

Most children can be identified as one of three basic types or clusters of temperament...

Easy

Difficult

Slow-to-warm-up

From personal experience, I believe a child could be all three depending on the situation. Easy children generally stay in positive mood, establish regular routines, and adapt easily to new experiences. Difficult children react negatively and cry frequently, engage in irregular daily routines, and are slow to accept change. Slow-to-warm-up children have a low activity level, are somewhat negative, and display a low intensity of mood.

My 5 year old son is a very easy going children when he is doing something that he enjoys like being outside. He tends to be more difficult when he has to do something e doesn't enjoy...like eating his dinner instead of playing. This when the attitude comes out and he becomes defiant. He is less likely to listen to me and

They say gender and culture are important factors in shaping the the influences of temperament in children. I absolutely agree with this statement. I have been around children most of my life and now have one of my own. I have always been drawn to little girls.
