Many argue that a decision of whether or not to kill oneself is a private choice which society has no right to be concerned about. This position assumes that suicide comes from competent people making rational decisions to die, and then states that society has no business "interfering" with a freely chosen death that only effects the suicidal individual. But according to experts who have studied suicide, this stance is wrong."

In a study published in "American Journal of Psychiatry" researchers checked up 35 years later with patients who had asked for doctor assisted suicide and it was shown that out of 886 people who were denied doctor assisted suicide, only 10.4% killed themselves after they had gone through years of counseling. This proves that pain is tolerable and that being killed by a doctor denies them of ever having hope of getting better

If, as a society, we tell people with neither a terminal illness or disability that, although they want to kill themselves, what they really need is counseling and therapy; but turn around to disabled people and tell them that they can end their suffering by allowing a doctor to kill them. How is that respecting a choice if we deny them the opportunity for therapy? We'd be saying that a life with a disability is not a life worth living

"Most people with disabilities will tell you that it is not so much their physical or mental impairment itself that makes their lives difficult as it is the conduct of the nondisabled majority toward them. Denial of access, discrimination in employment, and an attitude of aversion or pity instead of respect are what make life intolerable. True respect for the rights of people with disabilities would dictate action to remove those obstacles -- not "help" in committing suicide."

Many people who are considering doctor assisted suicide see themselves as a burden on their families and friends. If the people closest to them support the opposing viewpoint in helps to reinforce the idea that their life is meaningless. At that point it is no longer seen as a "right to die" but a duty to die.
