Assess the case studies listed below (by looking at the museum's website and anything else you can find easily on the internet) in terms of the questions here alongside this box on this padlet wall (particularly questions 2-4). The fundamental objective of this exercise is for you to do some very quick and basic online research so that you can tell the group something about what makes the case study private museum distinctive and innovative (or not) in your opinion.

1. What are the key characteristics of a private museum?

2. How does this kind of museum differ from larger, more institutionalised examples, such as state and national museums of art?

3. What motivates their development as far as the collector is concerned? And what motivates their success (or failure) as far as the public viewing these spaces is concerned?

4. How do the the case studies differ among themselves in terms of the different ways that they frame their collections and in terms of their presentation of themselves as an institution - in particular, consider the issue of how the image of the presiding spirit of the collector/s is presented in each of the case studies - what do these differences have to tell us about the different orientations / aspirations of these museums?
