In the novel The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, music plays a significant role to convey the mood of various scenes throughout. In fact, the majority of music used are from the Jazz Age, or the 1920's, which is also the setting of the book. Music demonstrates emotions felt during the novel, such as love, heartbreak, and happiness. Three songs played in the novel are "Three O'Clock in the Morning" by Paul Whiteman, "The Sheik of Araby" by Fats Waller, and "Ain't We Got Fun" by Van and Schenck. Thus, these songs correlate to several songs in today's pop culture.

The song "Three O'Clock in the Morning" by Paul Whiteman was played during Gatsby's party, where Daisy, Tom, and Nick were gossiping about Gatsby as well as his occupation. The type of song is a love song, played by Jazz. Nick proceeds to wonder what would happen if Gatsby falls in love with another girl at the party, and forgets about Daisy. In fact, the song demonstrates Gatsby's deep love for Daisy, and his devotion to her will never change. Fitzgerald included this song to create a peaceful, romantic mood during the party. It shows that people are likely to find their significant others in the party. Indeed, the line "sounds like an old sweet love tune" (Whiteman) in the song truly explains why the song is a representation of Gatsby's love for Daisy.

The song "Playing with Fire" by Blackpink correlates to "Three O'Clock in the Morning" by Paul Whiteman, thus conveying the same atmosphere for the party scene in the book. This is a k-pop song about love, as shown by the lyrics "my love is on fire" (Blackpink). Both songs provide a romantic mood that emphasizes Gatsby's love for Daisy. They both have deep and romantic tunes in the song, which reminds Nick that Gatsby deserves true love.

#2 "The Sheik of Araby" by Fats Waller

The song "The Sheik of Araby" by Fats Waller is played during the scene in which Jordan and Nick are driving in New York. It was almost evening, and they were discussing about why Gatsby moved across the bay from Daisy. It turns out that Gatsby wants to be with her for five years, and he really wants to attract her attention in order to revive their old love. This is yet another love song, as suggested by the lyrics "your love belongs to me" (Waller). Fitzgerald uses this song in this particular scene to foreshadow Gatsby's reunion with Daisy, as well as their unforgotten love. It emphasizes Gatsby's tremendous passion for Daisy, since he has been living across from her for five years, which is a really long time.

"Issues" by Julia Michaels correlates to "The Sheik of Araby" by Fats Waller because both songs describes the love between Daisy and Gatsby, and how much Gatsby needed her. "Issues" is a really appropriate fit, because it's a love song with the lyrics "yeah I got issues, and one of them is how bad I need you" (Julia Michaels). Because Gatsby really needed Daisy in his life, he was determined to move across from her, and hold parties every day to attract her attention. Both songs create the mood of love, romance, and desire.

#3: "Ain't We Got Fun" by Van and Schenck

Fitzgerald included the song "Ain't We Got Fun" by Van and Schenck in the scene when Daisy first went to Gatsby's house. This is a lighthearted, joyful Jazz song, and it is played in order to portray the positive energy of Gatsby's house. In addition, the lyrics "the rich gets richer and the poor get laid off" (Van and Schenck) suggest Gatsby's wealth. These lyrics mean that the rich becomes richer while the poor have children, which ends up making them even poorer than they already were. With his wealth, he is able to provide joy and fun for Daisy as well as his other guests, thus winning over her love. Fitzgerald included this song in this specific scene to demonstrate Gatsby's unconditional love and care for Daisy, even after five years.

The rap song "I Got It" by Bhad Bhabie correlates to "Ain't We Got Fun" by Van and Schenck, because both songs are about how the rich get to have fun. Bhad Bhabie included the lyrics "50k cash, I got it" to show how rich she is, and nobody should get in the way of her goals and dreams. Gatsby, likewise, believes that he will eventually marry Daisy, and she will tell Tom that she doesn't love him. His wealth is a huge factor in holding such belief. Both songs create the mood of happiness, joy, wealth, and excitement for the future.
