A book club was formed by accident among acquaintances because the members were caught out after curfew and used the literary society as their excused. Eventually turned into a meeting between good friends who could talk about literature. At this time, book stores were destroyed and good books were a rare find. The book club was a great distraction during the war, especially for those who directly affected by the war. Most characters had to endure some sort of loss, whether it be temporary or permanent, that the literary society helped them through. The books read also educated some of the islanders who, otherwise, would not have had a reason to read. Most members of the book club had not read since grade school, and the society made them read brought people together that would, otherwise, not even think about picking up a book.
