"' I hope you're ready, because I'm about to tell you the story of my life. More specifically, why my life ended. And, if you're listening to these tapes, you're one of the reasons why'" (Asher 7).
The cassette tape is a significant symbol in the book because the tapes drive the story. More specifically, this is an important symbol because it represents Hannah finally pointing the finger at those that bullied her. More so, every time the tapes pop up, the reader knows that he/she is about to bear witness to another story of malicious harm toward Hannah. The tapes serve as the victim's statement and then forces the reader to become a witness to these horrid acts. As the perpetrators hear her story, we are also forced to bear witness.

The Walkman is significant in the book because it is the tool that connects Hannah to those that hurt her. Ultimately, it is the only portal that connects Hannah's declaration toward her abusers.

In 13 Reasons Why, Clay, one of the protagonists has multiple sides to his personality. There are admirable traits like the fact that he is mostly kind and, eventually begins to seek justice for Hannah. However, there are flaws that he possesses. For example, Clay is weak and fits the profile of a bystander, who allows Hannah to be sexually exploited and
humiliated by the guys in their school. Another flaw is that he is ignorant and seems "The LIST" as a compliment, not necessarily as a humiliating insult.
