You must explain WHY what happens shows that he is NOT typical and give language features (film techniques) that were used to show you this.
CHARACTERISTICS OF A TYPICAL HERO IN A MILITARY FILM:
* Male  
* leader (either of total group or of small group of men within group)
* Brisk / gruff nature 
* respected by others 
* able to take charge of situations and defend against enemy 
* older man - experienced in life 
* could be seen as "father figure" to younger members of platoon
* has clear morals and ethics but isn't afraid to do drastic things to protect men / position

Desmond looks gentle and less violent when we compare him to his platoon who look angry and gruff. He definitely is not seen as the "father figure." Desmond becomes more of a follower than a leader in the camp and has different beliefs to what he wants to do in the war than the other soldiers. Especially when Desmond doesn't want to pick up a gun the platoon disrespect him and fight him. The director uses this scene to show the comparison between the expectations of a war hero and someone expected not to be a hero.
