Reflecting on the process by EUN Partnership aisbl

Describe the ways in which conducting an action research project as part of this course helped you to understand the process required for completing such a project on your own. What challenges have you faced and how did you overcome them? What have you learned? What advice would you give to your past self or someone that is going through the same process? What’s your future vision of how action research can benefit you?

First of all, I must say that the middle-stage peer-assessment really made me realize that I did not grasp the essentials of the AR and I needed more reflection. I learned that talking to my colleagues was really helpful and full of guidance. I consider that Action Research must not be limited to one course activity but it should be included in regular teaching activity.

As I said previously, my main constraint, as for other teachers, was time. That’s why I changed this action research into a small-scale study case. However, it was still very enlightening as it confirmed my initial beliefs that students preferred teacher-made materials, as these better helped understand topics, learn and develop CT skills and promoted their civic participation while still working on their English proficiency. Also, my thoughts that most coursebooks fail to include CT and CP activities turned out right, at least for this class of 22 students where I conducted my study.

I am an avid learner, so I always try to innovate and reflect on my teaching methods and practices. This action research is just a visible product of things I already do on a more reflexive basis. These actions can definitely benefit whoever implements them as they can improve their teaching.

As I previously mentioned, my biggest challenge was time. I had to do the implementation before the Easter break and I was very lucky that none of the students got sick and could perform the activities included in my plan.
I have learned that my students can learn autonomously (with the teacher present in the classroom to answer questions) and they can be more motivated when learning with laptops. In order to obtain good results, they need to have very clear instructions.
My advice is to plan carefully and take notes all the time.
I think that action research should be included in the teacher's daily basis because it can be very useful to find out solutions to many problems we face everyday in the classroom.

I feel like action research is an exciting journey...which you should not do alone. As I already mentioned the role of a critical friend was so much important. If it weren't for him, I would be lost! sometimes my concern was in the wrong direction, as I focused on results and not the process. I also enjoyed talking to my colleagues about the process..they also tried to contribute in the research, and I felt that it made us work better as a team!

The biggest challenge was obviously time. I might have done the whole research even better if I had more time, so next time I do it for myself and not the course purposes I will definitely give myself more time. I learned that students love being in charge of their own learning, they are more engaged and motivated if the activities are designed in a way that the students are given more freedom, choice and voice. Advice I would give my past self is to stop behaving like I have to make all the decisions in the classroom. Action research is a great way to keep teachers reflecting on their practice and as a consequence improve their practice.

As it is mentioned from other participants the lack of time is one of the challenges that I faced. This is the end and I have to conclude with the report although the eTwinning projects in which the AR was based are still going on. Another challenge that I faced is the fact that the 2nd eTwinning project is not going very well (several reasons explain that) so I do have some findings but not the expected ones. What I learned for this AR was that It is possible to teach in Langauge Departments abroad with eTwinning since it motivates pupils and increases their interest to come to "school" to learn their parent (s) language better. I would advice myself to feel more secure next year while teaching in these courses, not to use as much the suggested official books and engage pupils in more collaborative activities. After all, "two heads are better than one"! What I think for Action Research is that it helped me realized it for one more time in a new teaching field. A key element of an ongoing improvement.

Challenges: Time. I overcomed it by comprising the activities. I have learnt to better plan my activities and to adapt time more better. As an advice to my past self, for the same process, reconsider the research plan to be fully adaptable to whatever challenge might encounter. My future vision is to explore new ways of how my students can benefit of all the activities and how much they can improve themselves from it.

There was a lot of chalenges. Like how to implemented in the classes, are they prepare to go forward with the process, how are going to react?
Also the data to collecte, I was with some uncertainities and afraid that wasnt the best or all I could do, but I needed to put some bonderies to the process. I learned that althought this is a challenged process, it makes do our best and discover we can do better then expected, even if things are not exactly as we expected, that is also something to make a note and reflexion. In future works I hope to be always challenging myself and discovering new things to improve. Not stop to get a better teacher and a better person in the middle of the school environment that is always unexpected but full of things to explore and discover along with the students.

Time is always a challenge.
Getting everyone to agree on when, how and with what resources, is difficulty but possible.
For this term I would't change the LS, but maybe, next year it would be possible to engage other students from different classes, and exchange knowledge, using a similar approach, and working together with other teachers.
Also, it is important that the teacher gives students (and him/herself) the time and space to think about their work, and the possibility to improve it later.
