When checking a test or an assignment, marking it with checks or "exes" is completely meaningless if the student doesn't understand WHAT he did wrong and WHY he did it wrong. In order for the learning process to be effective, the student needs to LEARN from the process and not just get a grade. I always try to write some personal comments when giving back tests/assignments.
