They needed to pass a test and get a licence in order to practice medicine. The greatest Muslim doctor was Ibn-Sina. He wrote many different books on medicine. His most famous work was a medical encyclopedia. Beautiful works include finely woven carpets and colorful tiles. One of the most popular designs was the arabesque. It appeared on everything from metal boxes to rugs and palace walls. Architecture was an important Islamic art. Muslim architects built striking mosques, shrines, and places. These buildings combined designs from many different cultures. A characteristics of many mosque is a minaret. The Dome of the rock a mosque in Jerusalem is the oldest standing  Muslim building. Built in Byzantine style, it features a striking gilded dome that sparkles in the sunlight. The Alhambra a Muslim palace in Grenada a Spain blends elegant architecture with lush gardens. The Taj Mahal a Muslim monument in India is known today as one of the most beautiful buildings in the world. Painting was not an important at form in the Islamic world. Islam discouraged art that showed human or animal figures, as this was considered a form or idol worship.
