On page 40, Mona says, “Lydia and I knew we had to prove ourselves to our new school.” This picture shows how she was trying to find herself. Not only during high school, but after as well. It relates to the theme because it literally show how she struggles to find herself throughout the story. To be the Mona she wants to be, not the Mona everyone wants.

Outlier

On page 64 it says “Is that why you don't smoke dope? Are you a spy for the cops?” Another example is on page 237, “I thought you looked like you belonged in the back of the squad car, not the front." This picture relates to the theme because Mona was always judged right away and in result, she became and outlier. One was for being in a gang and not doing typical gang stuff. Another one is working at the police station and still thinking poorly about cops.

On page 236 Mona said that “I had been on duty less than a month when I found out that I had inspired a variety of colorful rumors.” Many of those rumors involved her being wired, that she wanted to burn cops, and that she was a spy for the gangs in Santa Ana. The picture relates to the theme because Mona was an outsider in her own workplace. She worked so hard to get to the spot she was in but the police officers still thought of her as different.

On page 131 it says “ Death had touched me on its way to claim Oso, and that had changed me. My father was right, Osuna and Brown were right, and the voice in my head was right. The gangs offered nothing but pain and loss, and I wanted no more of it. I wanted to go to school and pursue a career, even if it cost me Frank. I promised myself that the gangs would no longer be in my life. It was time to follow my dreams.” There were many times in the story where Mona persevered through her problems. This picture relates to the theme because it literally shows a woman going through a storm with only an umbrella and still walking.

On page 77 she says to herself, "I was stunned by the education requirements needed to become a cop and decided that I could never fulfill them." The picture of a person sitting in the dark with the very light image of rain can show how Mona's head was during most of the entire story. The quote shows how she immediately doubted herself and wonders if she can really do it.

On page 209 Mona said to Frank “No. You're not part of my life anymore, and I got nothing left for you. I hate you! Do you hear me? I wish you’d die. Leave me alone or I'll call the cops and send you back to a cell.” Mona was finally coming out from the past and stepping up for herself and her son. She was coming of age and leaving it all behind. The picture relates to the theme because you can say the person walking out of the dark cave into the light is Mona. She was finally going to leave Frank for good.
