1. The True Story of the Three Little Pigs- Jon Scieszka

This is the story of the 3 little pigs, told by the wolf. He gives us his perspective on the legendary tale.

This book is perfect for teaching voice because it has a perspective we have never seen. It's full of justifications and wit, showing us who the big bad wolf really is.

Example: The wolf went to get a cup of sugar from one of the pigs, and since he was sick he sneezed the house down. The pig ended up dying so he says "it seemed like a shame to leave a perfect ham dinner lying around so I ate it up". All through the story, the wolf keeps justifying his actions and this is one example. Instead of going to the police and getting help, he just eats the dead pig and moves on to another house to ask for sugar. We can clearly tell what kind of person the wolf is.

This is the story of Alexander, who goes through a crazy day. The poor boy just can't catch a break. From morning to night, he has a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day.

This book is perfect for teaching voice because the main character expresses his full thoughts and frustration. Alexander gets jealous, sad, angry, disappointed, and more. He complained about every little thing.

Example: An elevator door closed on Alexander's foot, then his brother made him fall into mud and called him a crybaby for crying. When Alexander tried to punch him for what he had done, he was the one who got in trouble with his mom. "...my mom came back with the car and scolded me for being muddy and fighting. I am having a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day, I told everybody. No one even answered." Poor Alexander had gone through so much that day and he was just over it, no one even listened to him.
