How Does Knowles Make This Extract a Memorable Moment in the Novel?

In the novel, Knowles uses the idea of being drunk to describe the absolute state of blithe that Gene and his compatriots are in, to describe the innocence of the students, and thus make this extract a memorable moment. Gene doubts whether it was the cider that was the cause of the boys' freedom, or their "exuberance [that] intoxicated [them]." This means that Gene doubts that it was the alcohol that was the cause of their newly found freedom, by banking the question of whether they were in a state of blithe because of the atmosphere and environment around them, and their newly found enthusiasm for the carnival. The word 'exuberance' to show that the boys were in a state of ebullience, and were energized by their surroundings. This suggests that they are innocent as they are getting excited over something so simple, which wouldn't be so exciting if they had been exposed to the war and its nocous character. The word 'intoxicated' means that the world around them faded away and they started to become naive and nonchalant, and gave no attention to the real world, which suggests that they were completely oblivious to the horrific and tyrannizing experience that Leper is going through. The author uses this serenity to create more tension at the end of the extract when Gene gets the telegram from Leper which drags Gene out of his dreamy state, thus creating a sense of realization which hit Gene hard, and affected the mood around him in a negative way. Knowles also shows how the boys had "sent restrain flying." The word 'restrain' means to hold back where as the word 'flying' means to get off the ground and break into flight. Knowles', use of an oxymoron to show how Gene's personality has been built up of tension and now that Finny is back, he is learning to let go, which depicts the fact that Gene is growing. It also outlines the contrast between the restraint of countries by their borders and how they try to expand it with wars, with the freedom of the Boys, currently, associated with the flight of a bird. This displays his re-acquired innocence which explains to the reader how vulnerable they will be to shock, when information on Leper's situation is released, which increases tension further.

PEAEA

Knowles creates a change in tone to make the extract memorable. Gene had jumped off the slope and described the feeling as being "a sensation of soaring flight". This creates a sense or an atmosphere of freedom which contradicts the the underlying theme of the war. Knowles presents this to show us that they have forgotten all about the war which creates a sense of freedom as suggested by "soaring flight" this also links to a bird and usually birds are related to freedom. This is also located close to the nagumasette river which displays strength and dominance which is reflect in their friendship as Finny is the dominant one in their relationship. As the carnival continues they receive a telegram from Leper which they didn't expect to receive which reads "I have escaped and i need help". This is a large change in tone as the underlying theme of the war is prominent in this section as they realise that there is a war ongoing. The word "escaped" suggests that he was trapped in something terrible and had to get out as soon as possible this tells us that Leper was hurt or scared. The fact that he also asked for help from his friends which would present an atmosphere of urgency which destroys their atmosphere of freedom and innocence.Knowles has created an oxymoron as he has compared the war to the theme of freedom and innocence to create this more memorable. This change of tone would make it memorable to the audience due to this oxymoron.

Knowles makes this extract a memorable moment through capturing the use of the boy's innocence and youth during the winter carnival. The "cider began to take charge" of the boys. this means that they have been drinking for a while and the use of personification illustrates the fact that it is not them who is in control of them but the alcohol that is controlling them. This causes a light and happy mood where Finny forgets his injury and gets "with only one leg to create a droll dance". This is reflecting on the time that Finny had all his abilities and at this moment and the pain and struggle of loosing his abilities is gone and he is able to dance and have fun with all the spots and fun surrounding him. There are no rules and therefore creating a happy and joyful atmosphere. Furthermore, at the moment the boys escaped to a "special and separate peace" away from the war. Knowles utilises the theme of war to influence all the decisions and conversations the boys have. They are involved in the war despite the fact that they are not directly in it therefore causing them to be in a "separate peace" from it. The reference to the book's title is to show the audience what impact the war has on the boys and their youth. Knowles makes it memorable as this scene brings out the "peace" and happiness that they are having away from the war.

Knowles furthermore creates this a memorable scene through the impact of the telegram. The joy that the boys are having is interrupted when Gene receives a telegram from Lepper as he has "escaped". The telegram brings them back to reality and there is a change in tone and atmosphere from a light and happy to a dismal and almost depressing tone as the boys are reminded of reality and the ongoing war. That one of them was a part of and has now "escaped" and is seeking help. The change in tone

Knowles makes this a memorable moment in the extract through the theme of innocence and youth. Finny feels a sense of 'inner joy at life for a moment.' The use of the word 'joy' shows a positive tone because it's informing that Finny is enjoying himself. It suggests that Finny feels cheerful even though he has to learn to live with his injury. It also suggests that there's a sense of joy only for a short amount of time. Finny is remembering before his injury because he's having fun and he has forgotten about his injury for a moment. The 'hard cider began to take charge of us.' This means that they have been drinking and their starting to feel intoxicated. The use of personification shows that the cider is the one that's taking over them and they are not themselves. It shows that the boys want to feel free and it highlights their youth.

How does Knowles make this extract a memorable moment?

Knowles makes this extract a memorable moment by contrasting the theme of war and the boy's youth. The "hard cider began to take charge" of the boys. This highlights the playful spirit that they embody and the reckless nature that they have. The use of personification shows how the alcohol is taking over the boys and how everything that is going on, whether its the war or Finny's accident, is completely forgotten because the cider is bringing out the carless side of them. Knowles intentionally utilises this device to create a wistful atmosphere and emphasise the theme of naivety that is very significant at this moment. However, the boy's youth is immediately contrasted as soon as the telegram arrives for Gene. The telegram "drained away" the joy and introduces a sense of "uproariousness and shock". The innocence and freedom is abruptly taken away as the theme of war creeps back into the boy's lives. The "uproariousness" that is invoked shows the riotous and chaotic tone that engulfs the boys when the war is mentioned as war connotes to violence and mayhem. It generates a dramatic tone because it starts off with the boys enjoying themselves and then it suddenly changes.

Knowles makes this a memorable moment in the novel by referencing the boys' innocence and freedom. Knowles refers to the miniature ski jump as a "sensation of soaring flight". The use of the word "flight" has connotations of birds, which can be sued to represent freedom in the sense that birds, when flying, are able to roam wherever they please. The use of the word "soaring" is used to further emphasise this as it has connotations of high-flying and reaching greater heights. This can suggest that the boys have a much stronger feeling of freedom compared to the previous weeks. This sense of freedom and innocence of the boys is also shown when Knowles sets Phineas "in the kind of world he loved". This can further show Phineas' character as it shows this level of positivity in his behaviour was only seen before his incident. This contrasts Gene's behaviour as Phineas' excitement is more pronounced compared to Gene. This can suggest that Gene feels a bit more negative in relation to Phineas. This relates to how Knowles describes Phineas' dance as "his choreography of peace". The word "choreography" has connotations of gracefulness and beauty through the movement of a person. This can suggest that Phineas' dance was more graceful than it is random. The reader will

The word 'exuberance' suggests cheerfulness and Knowles' use of this word creates a youthful and excited tone which displays their innocence. This displays an atmosphere of content. The boys are extremely exhilarated over something barely worth such excitement, which highlights their innocence . In their happiness they are enjoying life and have almost forgotten about the war and problems that surround them displayed by the word 'intoxicated' which emphasizes their naïvety, which may evoke a sense of sympathy towards them in the audience. Knowles use of this short display of youth and innocence with the problems fading away creates a memorable and joyful moment. This is further emphasized through their 'escape from the gray encroachments of 1943.' The word 'gray' connotes something misery and dullness, the word encroachment means to approach stealthily where t his could represent how the war creeped up on the boys steadily and how the boys are never a part of it yet how they are always affected by it which is always evident in the background. The date '1943' brings in the context of war further and this moment of 'escape' instills a tone of relief and easiness. The reader's are made to feel sympathy for the boys and the tension in their life due to the war, moreover creates a mood of solace for the audience.
Knowles use of the motif of war creates a memorable moment.

HOW DOES KNOWLES MAKES THIS EXTRACT A MEMORABLE MOMENT IN THE NOVEL?

Knowles makes this a memorable extract by the utilisation of the contrast of themes. Finny doing a "droll dance" in the carnival creates an uplifting atmosphere as he is a disabled person who has forgotten about all his problems and pain and is able to dance in the joy of the carnival. The word "droll" is used to highlight the humorous dance Finny has done resembling the comical atmosphere of the carnival. This displays the theme of innocence that Knowles bring back to the novel showing to the audience that the boys haven't lost their innocence despite the fact that the war is becoming more significant to them. However, this joyous atmosphere is contradicted with the "uproariousness and shock" of Finny's reaction to the telegram. This shows the interruption of the theme of innocence and joy that was seen in the carnival by the theme of war.

While dancing on the table Phineas feels "his own inner joy at life for a moment" showing that the carnival and celebrations make him happy and joyous, as opposed to how he previously felt after becoming "disabled" making this extract memorable as for once Knowles set a joyful, positive mood despite Finny having his injury. As finny is having fun "with only one leg he crates a droll dance" harsh sound mirror or mimick the sound of dance, sprining and spinning contrast with the repetition of the d to give up beat demonstrating happiness

The carnival was seen to make the "schoolboy egotism of Devon conjured away" demonstrating the change in mood as the boys competitiveness for each other in such a prestige school like Devon was "conjured away" as if disappearing without a trace with their careless naivety disappearing bringing up the enjoyment of the atmosphere. Towards the end of the carnival, the boys receive a telegram making Phineas' emotion "drain away". The use of the word "drained" demonstrates the innocence and freedom of the moment or carnival all suddenly taken away because of the recurring haunting theme of the war as it creeps in again. Knowles utilizes the telegram to create a dramatic tone.

How does Knowles make this a memorable moment in the novel?

Knowles makes this a memorable moment in the novel by highlighting the contrast of the war to the characters' innocence and youth. Knowles describes the mood at the beginning of the extract as a 'hurtling high". Language is used to describe the Euphoria and "high" the boys are feeling from being intoxicated. this shows the boys' innocence and youth since they are intoxicated, euphoric and careless to what is going around them at the moment which is ironic since the war is the theme that is running through the background of the novel. Towards the end of the extract, Knowles uses Leper's telegram to snap the boys back to the reality of what is going on around them. the mood is described through Finny's "Uproariousness and Shock" reaction. This highlights the transition from happiness and euphoria to "Shock". This is where the theme or war comes into place as the reason they are brought to the crashing reality is the reality of the war going on around them.

Knowles makes this extract a memorable moment, indicates the theme of innocence and youth through the characters Gene and Finny. When the boys started to ingulf the "hard cider" showing there youth and recklessness. This also indicates that there is a sense of the boys wanting to feel free and happy again. Knowles does this to underline the theme of war, as just like alcohol takes charge of a person, so does the war.
Knowles also mentions that the alcohol "hard" this being a metaphor. Knowles uses to indicate to the reader that the boys are still young and carefree, but the reader understands the war as being harsh and violent, this taking away
the freedom that the boys have. Thus making the reader feel sympathetic towards the boys as they don't know the whole of the war. This shows the naivety of the boys as the propaganda of the war indicates that war is great and if the boys join the war they will be dominant.

In addition, Knowles then indicates youth and innocence through Finny, as Finny "droll dances" on a table.
Knowles does this to show the happiness and positivity that Finny had incovered due to the catastrophic accident. But now being uncovered. Knowles does this to illustrate irony as Finny finally gets joy and happiness back. Creating a positive tone as it enlightens the reader to see Finny joyful and happy again. Although this is ironic because all the positivity comes crashing down when there's an end to Finny's life. This makes the reader feel emethatic and sorrow to know that one of the humble characters being pulled away. Furthermore, this creates a melancholic tone. As Finny isn't even in the war, but yet he went through brutal accidence. This underlying the tone of war and how the boys are still apart of the war on the outside while not actually being part of the war. Furthermore, Knowles uses alliteration to indicate the movement of Finny dancing on the table. Showing a dramatic theme.
