Chaos and Order

"'That's okay,' Dad said."Catch your breath.'
When I recovered, Dad picked me up and heaved me back into the middle of the Hot Pot. 'Sink or swim!' he called out. For the second time, I sank."

I chose this quote because it shows both a chaotic situation and an orderly paternal moment. This picture is a "Hot Pot" as recalled in the memoir. The nature of Yellowstone is very serene and orderly. But in some places Yellowstone reveals chaotic and caustic pools of sulfur.

"I have a really good feeling about this Christmas," Mom announced in early December... She had such a good feeling that she'd decided that this year we were going to celebrate Christmas on Christmas Day."

I think the Walls avoided anything traditional because it was traditional. And something so traditional like Christmas being celebrated a week after is very Walls like. The hippie ,as show, defines the term non-conformity perfectly.

"I was three years old... I was wearing the dress to cook hot dogs..."

If this quote doesn't yell self-sufficiency I don't know what would. As a three-year-old she was boiling water to make herself hot dogs. This picture shows self-sufficiency because most children don't make their own food.

Fantasy vs Reality

"'I'll cut down the prices on my rocks,' I said. Lori paused and looked down. 'I don't think that will be enough she said.
'I guess we can eat less,' i said.
     'We have before,' Lori said."

This quote relates to subject because it shows Jeannette's fantasy and their depressing reality. The picture of the geode represents a rock in Jeannette's rock collection. On the outside a geode looks like a plain rock that would belong in a yard. But on the inside it is a spectacle from a fantasy world.

"Dad got out of the car, knelt down, and tried to give me a hug. I pulled away from him.
'I thought you were going to leave me behind,'I said.
'Aww I'd never do that,' he said...
'You busted up your snot locker pretty good.'
'Snot Locker' was the funniest name I'd ever heard for a nose...
Snot locker it was hilarious.

This quote details how fast Jeannette changes from thinking she will be abandoned to laughing about a silly word. Either this shows her ability to move on and forgive her dad, or her dad's love for his family. The image shows a girl smiling just like Jeannette did when her dad called her nose the snot locker. This image shows forgiveness because people often hug when they forgive one another.

Unconditional Love

"They had dinner with Ginger, who kept laughing and talking real loud and touching both Dad and Brian. Then all three climbed the stairs to one of the hotel rooms...Dad and Ginger went into the bedroom while Brian stayed in the front room and read his new comic book."

I feel this excerpt was the opposite of the topic, and that's why I chose it. Throughout the memoir Rex tells Mary that he loves her, but it doesn't seem fully true. The image is obviously The Green Lantern. That is also the name of the brothel. Could it also be the comic book that Brian was reading? This image shows unconditional love because super heroes sacrifice their lives to save others.
