Reasoning why people took the bus routs

Their object was to protest racial segregation in interstate bus terminals by testing to see if those facilities were still segregated despite a 1960 Supreme Court ruling. In the face of harassment and sometimes violent physical attacks, the Freedom Riders maintained their nonviolent stance and ultimately forced the integration of 120 bus terminals in the South.

The freedom riders were young black and white Americans that decided to ensure that the integrated buses law was being followed by taking the buses and posting signs outside the bus about their rights.
Riders were attacked in Antagonist and Birmingham while the law enforcement “looked the other way.”
Even though blacks had "equal rights" they were still attacked while the law enforcement had looked the others way which showed perfectly that the integrated bus laws had no effect. Because the Freedom riders were attacked, it brought national attention to them and made more people want to join into the cause.

In the image you can see a bus that evidently is on fire and from the text below, "A bus carrying civil rights Freedom Riders is fire-bombed during a caravan to advocate black voting rights in 1961." Obviously these advocates of equal rights were attacked from not harming anyone, which in the end brought more attention to their cause. Although this was bad at first because people were injured, in the end people did see this and it opened their eyes to the fact that peaceful protesters were being prosecuted by people who were opposed to desegregation

Image of a bus filled with freedom riders riding through Jackson Mississippi
Shows us that these riders were predominantly in the south where southerners (people who were mostly against the integrated bus laws) did not accept these bus segregation laws. In order to make a point that these laws were still unaccepted by many and to make a change to ensure these laws are enforced.
