After Mao Zedong came into power, in 1927 he abolished the ancient tradition of women becoming slaves and instead gave women rights. Women's lifestyles were changed. The practice of footbinding was overruled, women could go to school and get an education, and they were able to divorce.

Mao Zedong changed the lifestyles of the women in 1927 because he wanted everyone to convert to a full on communist society. In a communist society, everyone has equal rights with the addition of everything being run by the government.

Extended Families Effect on Women

Extended families living in one house causes difficulty for the women to maintain the household. With more people to care for, the women would need to clean areas more often and tend to each individual person. They worked in the fields harder to gain food to feed their families. Even today in Modern China, women are still tending to their families, like in ancient China.

In Ancient China, men usually decided what would happen to woman. Women were regarded inferior to men; girls had to be obedient to their fathers, wives to their husbands, and old women to their sons. Men could order woman to do almost anything. They could order woman to clean, take care of the children, cook, etc. All of these things changed after Mao came to power. Fortunately, now women have more rights than they ever did in Ancient China. In modern day China, woman are almost equal to men, but are still considered lesser.
