My students did not have any experience being in a school setting. We needed to take extra time to learn basic routines. Students missed out on socialization and learning self-control. For example, they didn’t understand the concept of sitting on the rug together with other students and participating in a lesson. Sitting on Zoom all day was not developmentally appropriate, but my students persevered. I was so impressed with their learning!

Some of my younger students (K2 and 1st graders) seem to have undiagnosed learning disabilities and autism. Because of remote learning, many of the symptoms went undetected, so these kids have not been officially diagnosed and are not getting proper accommodations and services. However, they did very well and made progress on their reading and speaking levels.

One of the highs was the collaboration between the first-grade team. We created digital lesson plans that we continue to use. We also integrate more digital resources into our daily lessons like Epic and Seesaw. It was difficult to teach writing on Zoom. You need to be in-person to monitor their handwriting.

The students were not physically active during COVID. Many of our students did not leave their house for over a year! They had delayed motor skills when they returned to school for in-person learning. For example, we noticed that it was difficult for students to walk down the stairs. Also, students missed out on making friends and social and emotional learning.

Behavior this year is the biggest issue. During remote learning, classroom management was much more manageable. I used the “Mute” on students and sent them to break-out rooms to deal with outbursts. These kids missed out on two years of learning to socialize, make friends, and problem solve.

The worst part of COVID and remote learning was not being face-to-face with my students. It was incredibly challenging to find creative ways to meet my student’s IEPs. It was a quick pivot to remote learning, and I gave my all to make sure my students did not miss out on their learning!

Teaching fully remote learning was better than the hybrid model. Both had their challenges! It was very tough traveling to different classrooms and hooking into the teacher’s technology. We had to project the students on Zoom for the hybrid students, and the lessons needed to be available to both groups simultaneously. Sadly, the students in front of me got more attention than those on Zoom. One huge benefit is that I notice students are much savvier with technology.

During COVID, I mainly worked on the BPS Family Helpline troubleshooting Chromebooks, wifi, and hotspot issues, an entirely new role. It was challenging to troubleshoot students’ Chromebooks by providing directions over the phone. Often there was a language barrier, and we would need to find someone to translate. Overall solving these problems was rewarding, and students and families were thankful and happy. It was nice to connect with students and families that I usually don’t have the opportunity for.

Students who turned off their screen and did not participate in classroom conversations and activities did not make their learning goals. Some of my students would not show their face on the Zoom screen because they had family in the background or were embarrassed to show their home.
