Theme One: Breaking Society's Norms

The fist social norm that is broken is gender norms. In most books student's read a boy is always the hero. In this case the girl gets to save the boy. Princess Elizabeth's castle was burned down and her fiancé Prince Ronald was kidnapped. It was Princess Elizabeth's job to go and trick the Dragon so she could save Prince Ronald. The second social Norm that is broken is seen at the end of the book. The ending is very different then most fairy tales. Usually the couple will end up together however, Princess Elizabeth breaks social norms and leaves Prince Ronald and walks into the sunset by herself.

Theme Two: Too much Pride isn't always good.

There are two places in this book where we see having to much pride get in the way. The first one is when Princess Elizabeth outsmarts the Dragone. She challenges the Dragon to burning down forest with fire, and flying around the world. However, as he is flying around the world he becomes extremely tired and fall asleep, this gives the Princess her chance to save the Prince. The Prince is however, extremely ungrateful that she saved him while looking the way she did (in a paper bag, ashes all over her). He told her to come back when she looked more like a princess. However, Princess Elizabeth wasn't having that and called Prince Ronald a "bum".

Even though Princess Elizabeth's clothes were burnt away when the Dragon burnt down her castle. All she had to wear was a paper bag. But that didn't stop her from being intelligent and out witting the Dragon. It also didn't stop her from being brave and rescuing Prince Ronald. Just because she lost all her beautiful clothes she didn't change who she was on the inside.

Worksheet for my students: Story Mapping

I believe that this book has very specific settings, characters, problem, and a solution. I think this would be a good book for my students to practice story mapping. This would also be for a younger grade.

Another Work sheet: Focuses on Reading Comprehension

The students would fill out a worksheet that has critical thinking questions on it. The questions would include: What are two things you would change in this story if you were the author? Why would you change them? The second question is: What about two things you would keep the same? Why would you keep these parts? The last question is: If you could add two extra parts to this story what would they be? Why would you? I think these are good questions to ask the students because it gets them thinking about what happened in the story and gives them the opportunity to voice their opinion on what they would change.
