The lessons the readers learn from the story is to be grateful for what you have. It can be used today because so many people take things for granted with what they have. They have home and family and they still want more to make them "happy" but it won't because it will never satisfied you. Kino felt that way. Coyotito got sick and Kino and Jauna needed some money, Kino got the pearl of the world and started taking advantage of it. He never knew how truly happy he was until he lost his child and we was so sad and miserable. Then at the end of the story him and Jauna were standing by each other to show that they are equal.
