Students learn how to listen to the opinions of those around them without jumping in with their own ideas. They learn how to be respectful towards those who may have different opinions.
2. The teacher can assess understanding by taking a role as an observer rather than the sole provider of knowledge. The teacher can tell which students may be confused or need some reteaching.
3. This could enhance any plan that I already have that is focused around discussion. I could use similar activities after reading a short story with my class so that the students can consider a variety of ideas from their peers.

1. Student discussion fosters 21st century skills because it then helps them gain the necessary tools to hold and compose an intellectual conversation. When they discuss in any context we want them to be able to thoroughly express themselves with well thought out statements.
2. Student driven discussions are beneficial to the teacher because then the teacher can make note of what material is being understood clearly and what material might require supplementary coverage.
3. This type of activity is useful in a classroom setting but might also be useful in my position when mediating a situation with a number of people in the room. It teaches students to wait their turn to speak and not jump all over another speaker. It also teaches them that we can agree to disagree because we can back up our own opinions with factual statements.
