Affiliation refers to wanting to establish good relationships with other perpetrators or people who 'respect' being mean to others. If power is the concern then it is a matter of wanting control over others. When it comes to gender, girls are more likely to be motivated to cyber-bully due to affiliation and boys for power.

Furthermore, according to psychologists bullies are often people who have been either abused or neglected themselves. This means they usually bully to feel control because they can't gain that in other aspects of their life. The power that comes with bullying may give perpetrators a feeling of respect that they haven't gained from either peers or family members.

Ignorance of the consequences - The National Council on Crime Prevention reports that in a survey of teenagers, 81% said they believe others cyberbully because they think it’s funny. Because they don’t see their victims’ reactions in person, cyberbullies may not realise how much damage they are doing.

    With traditional bullying, research continues to show that the most effective strategies empower young people to be part of the solution.
    The possible solutions for cyber bullying involves students being a key determinant in improving the school climate, by encouraging them to be part of the solution. It suggests that children should:
    • engage their empathy and, instead of jumping on the bandwagon of cyber bullying or remaining passive bystanders, they can intervene and support each other;
    • refuse to participate in the spreading of hateful messages, and stand up for the victims of cyber bullying by offering support and by reporting the harassment to someone;
    • learn of good security practises when using social media sites that can protect and manage their devices.
    However...
    The responsibility is often on parents to keep their children safe, but the increase of new social sites and changing technology can often make it difficult to effectively monitor what they see and do online.
    These forms of solutions, where the child is recruited as the possible solution does not necessarily work; the underlying problems rooted in bullying need to be addressed before enlisting the same individuals to try and improve the situation.

  • Raising awareness on why people bully rather than simply punishing bullies can promote a deeper understanding of the situation and deal with the matter at the core, on a less superficial level. 
  • By understanding the negative affects that bullying has on both the victims and perpetrators we can create a more empathetic approach to dealing with cyber-bullying on all levels.
  • Mental health matters. Mental health is often regarded as a taboo and swept under the rug. By breaking the stereotypes surrounding what it is to be suicidal or mentally ill we can empower both bully's and victims to speak up about their issues and seek the help they need.

    The situation worsened to the point that the FBI had to intervene and 130,000 school campuses had to be blocked from the app to prevent bullying.
