Gatsby Symbol

My symbol from the book is the green light on Daisy's dock being across the bay from Gatsby's house. My symbol connects to the theme on how Gatsby won't let go of Daisy and keeps this hope she will take him back.In The Great Gatsby, Gatsby's desire to be with Daisy is symbolized by the green light off her dock. It demonstrates his optimism for the future and the kind of life he hopes to lead. Like Daisy, the light is far away from him, illustrating how difficult it is to realize his dream. Gatsby's desire for both love and success is related to the color green, which can represent hope, growth, and wealth. We are also prompted to consider how people pursue unrealistic dreams by the light. Gatsby believes the light means he can win Daisy back, but it really shows how impossible his dream is. This emblem relates to the idea of the American Dream, which holds that people strive for lofty objectives but fail.

“He stretched out his arms toward the dark water in a curious way, and, far as I was from him, I could have sworn he was trembling. Involuntarily I glanced seaward—and distinguished nothing except a single green light, minute and far away…”(Fitzgerald p.20-21). This shows Gatsby's longing for Daisy and the dream he has with her.

"Possibly it had occurred to him that the colossal significance of that light had now vanished forever. Compared to the great distance that had separated him from Daisy it had seemed very near to her, almost touching her. It had seemed as close as a star to the moon. Now it was again a green light on a dock. His count of enchanted objects had diminished by one.”(Fitzgerald p.93). This shows that the green lights meaning had faded away now that his dream of being with daisy had returned.

"If it wasn't for the mist we could see your home across the bay," said Gatsby. "You always have a green light that burns all night at the end of your dock."(Fitzgerald p.92). This shows how Gatsby has always liked Daisy and how much he cared about her.

“Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgastic future that year by year recedes before us. It eluded us then, but that’s no matter—tomorrow we will run faster, stretch out our arms farther.... And one fine morning"(Fitzgerald p.180). This shows how that green light let Gatsby live in his own world and little by little that world fades away.
