The 1st episode of the series was filled with the different issues.
The first one was about "unsinkable" Titanic, because the Lord Grantham's causin Patrick and another relative were on board and died.
Patrick was Mary's fiance and an heir of the whole fortune. Now the family faced up the following problems because of that:
- The whole estate will be inherited by a stranger,
- Mary will get a dowry, but not that attractive for the potential candidates for marriage with her

There are also some side issues, in my point of view:

1. A relationship between Bates and the Lord and the servants of the house.
2. Bates and Anna
3. Thomas and his desire \ wish to become a Lord's footman
4. Thomas and Duke
5. Relationships between Lord's daughters - especially Mary and Edith

There are at least 3 key points of Episode 1
1) Titanic had sank and Robert lost two heirs one night
2) Mr.Bates is a new valet , but he doesn't fulfill the duty due to an old injury.
3) Duke appearance in Downton, his discussion with Lord Gr. about Mary and scene with Thomas...I cringed

I was supposed to write something about a Downton's room, but all of them seem quite similar.Ancient, tranquil, gloomy design without breathtaking details.
I would say that the only difference is the size. Most of them are pocky, but the Lord's family rooms are spacious.

Thanks,
Ed
