1969 - Draft lottery instituted and many become "Draft Dodgers"

The draft lottery was a process in which the US government would randomly select a birthdate from a pool, and anyone who was born on that date would be required to enlist in the military. This process was highly controversial as many Americans did not believe in the US involvement in Vietnam in the first place. This led many people to attempt to avoid being drafted, this includes people who claimed to have certain beliefs, or physical issues that would not allow them to participate in military combat. These people were known as "Draft dodgers."

Operation Menu was a top secret campaign in which the US military bombed many different locations across cambodia. The goal of this campaign was to disrupt the flow of supplies by North Vietnam into the south, which many believed would "bleed out' the north. This campaign was ultimately a failure and caused more harm to civilians than the North Vietnamese military, making it highly controversial in America.
