         <description><![CDATA[<div>Students will be broken up into small groups, and each student will go around the classroom and choose a different object to bring to the group for everyone to observe. They will have a worksheet to write down what objects they observe and what they note about their properties in the corresponding box category. The properties they will be observing are color, texture, hardness, and flexibility. For example, if a student selects an eraser as their material, they would observe the color, it's texture as smooth or rough, it's hardness, and it's flexibility as either rigid or flimsy.          <title>Developmental Differences </title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>Attention Span: </strong>As children get older their attention span increases. By fifth grade they can spend a longer time focused on a task, read longer books, and participate in long term projects. <br><strong>Memory:</strong> Long term and short term memory starts to improve as students get older. They can recall things from previous lessons or experiences that occurred months or years before. <br><strong>Concentration: </strong>In second grade, students are more likely to be easily distracted by outside noise or movement, as they get older and get into fifth grade they are much better at ignoring distractions and staying focused on the task in front of them.<br><strong>Fine Motor Skills:</strong> At seven years old, around the time of second grade student's are beginning to master their gross fine more skills such as writing their names and using scissors. By eleven years old, around fifth grade, children show improved handwriting and ability to use a variety of more complex tools. <br><strong>Language: </strong>Second grade students are finally beginning to articulate thoughts and feelings and starting to pronounce words more clearly. They have not perfected everything, but have mastered the skills of reading and writing. The content will be more in-depth with the properties of matter, and the children will be working with more information. They can communicate fluently as well as give more detailed written explanations. They will also have the fine motor skills to use more complicated materials. The experiments can be more student-directed, allowing them to explain their thought process.&nbsp;They also will be spending more time on these activities, because their attention span has grown. This is because of their short attention span and limited ability to concentrate on a given task. They would also study more basic properties of materials due to little prior experience and their limited long term and short term memory. Students will use more verbal responses instead of writing and will use basic materials. Breaks in between tasks may also be necessary if the lesson seems to be taking longer than expected, or is a difficult task. Our standard is the third in a sequence of events and requires prior lessons that involve developing models to show that matter is made of particles too small to be seen, and measuring and graphing quantities to show how energy is conserved. The last standard to be covered in fifth grade comes after our chosen standard and involves conducting an investigation to determine whether mixing two substances results in a different substance.
