1.2 Meeting the needs of newly arrived migrant students
My school hasn't still experienced the flux of immigrants directly escaping from wars or/and persecutions, so the few foreign students in the classrooms are, most of all, sons of a more peaceful movement, they arrive with their families , pushed by the necessity to improve their economic conditions. Thank God, in many cases, they haven't witnessed the atrocities of wars; they may have linguistic difficulties at first, but no traumas. Their needs are easier to deal with. Anyway it's important to start building a permanent unit or staff, in schools, that could face a wider variety of problems related to the possible needs of migrant students

1.3 Organisation of integration

In my school foreign students are quickly integrated with the other students and follow the lessons mostly in Italian. Things change when there are the language classes, as they are taught in English, French or Spanish, depending on the language course chosen. Some of the newly arrived students, who may experience difficulties with the linguistic comprehension, may follow simpler lessons in small groups with other teachers who teach them the basic of Italian, but this isn't always like that because it depends on the funds the school receives to pay the few teachers that decide to work with these particular students.

1.4 Organising support at school level

As already said, in my school there isn't a precise support system for students from abroad. We, as teachers, do most of the work; we try to create projects that can meet the students' needs and a great part of the work is made on a voluntary basis. In some schools we meet and work with linguistic mediators, but their work is often in vain because they don't know if next year they will be there again and cooperate with the same students and teachers. School starts in September and they usually arrive, when possible, after 2 or 3 months. It's very difficult to work with foreign adults, when it happens it's thanks to PON projects, that is National Educational Projects financed by UE.

1.5 Community based projects

Community based projects are an excellent idea for the students and the local community where they start living.
It could be easily done also in my school with the right involvement of the people and town administrators.
First of all we could introduce the school structures to the newly arrived children; there they could follow sport, art, theatre and music lessons which are good to get them more involved in the new system. After that it could be interesting to start meeting the local area with visits of museums, libraries, parks, etc . There they can have an active role learning by doing. Once the students have accumulated a little experience of the new place around them, they can also start thinking about the places they are from, studying them, comparing the different realities and start this new experience of life as citizens of the world.

Iy could be advisable to have a psychologist to refer to in the schools as we are not ready to deal with complex issues as traumas, post war stress and so on. Even if we are willing to learn and welcome eveerybody in the classrooms, we can't succeed using our didactics only, a good support to our work is absolutely necessary!
