After learning about Tricia's story, I had a much different perspective of her. To say Tricia has experienced hardship is an understatement. However, if you met her, you would never know she has been through so much. She is always happy, thankful, and caring for those around her. She has always taught me to be positive and never take anything for granted.

A Topic We Discussed

A large topic we discussed were her vacations to the Philippines. When she has visited, she went to Minila. Tricia described it as a large city, and her favorite parts were going out to the bars and nightclubs. She said that Filipinos are big partiers and she spent her time dancing the night away. It was also mentioned how inexpensive the Philippines is, between food, drinks, hotels. She said the most expensive piece of the trips are the flights. While she was there, she also visited some family members that she still has in the islands.

I have only known a few Filipinos in my life, but the few I do know have very similar morals and values. They believe in working hard, being respectful, caring for others, and they are simply always happy. Whenever life throws a curveball they take it with grace. I am thankful to have known the few Filipinos I do because they have taught me to take life a little easier and not always be so uptight and worried.

Things That Impacted My Knowledge of Filipinos

Something that impacted my knowledge of Filipinos was the struggle they have when they arrive to America. Both of her parents were immigrants from the Philippines. Her mother was from Minila, and her father was from a lower income island in the southern islands. Her parents both came to America in the early twenties. Later on, they met for the first time in a local bar in Somers Point, NJ. From there, they began dating, got married and had Tricia and her younger brother. As immigrants of the US, they had many hardships including finding jobs. Tricia described her family as "living the American dream in poverty". Her family was already struggling when COVID-19 hit in 2020, which then led to her father being laid off. Not long after, they lost their home and were homeless. Tricia ended up using her life savings to purchase a house that was big enough for her entire family (parents, grandparents, and brother) which they still reside today. This impacted my knowledge of Filipinos because it made me realize how much they have to go through to get a taste of America, and most of the time do not even get to what born Americans are handed.
