Within the first 2 weeks of joining NSC, our SEND team meet with each EAL student to identify a Personalised Provision Pathway that will support them to integrate and access the curriculum at NSC. The nature of provision varies for each student and is directly informed by the English Proficiency Screening Test that identifies their starting point EAL level.

The provision plan is shared with families and staff, and a  meeting is scheduled for 6 weeks later to review progress, to celebrate success, and to alter the provision pathway if needed.

EAL students may follow the ‘Guided Course’ programme which is a progressive learning programme that takes them from Pre-A1 to B2. 

There are 31 support languages available which means that EAL students gain confidence in navigating their way around the site, as well as benefiting from explanations/ translations being given in their first language.

There are also independent study resources available in the Additional resources section of the Padlet. This may involve:

• EAL students being directed to an hour of independent study on LanguageNut in place of some, or all other homework activities, for a period of time.
• EAL students being directed to independent study on LanguageNut, in place of learning an additional foreign language (additional provision would usually be put in place for the student to sit a GCSE in their first language).
• EAL students being directed to independent study on the Additional resources section of this Padlet; their progress will be checked regularly as part of their Personal Provision Pathway.
•  1:1 or small group tutoring after school.

They may also fill in a personalised vocabulary list made from the common icons and instructions used in all Northstowe lessons. These have the English instruction and the icon in the left-hand column, with a space in the right-hand column for students to write the instruction in their own language. This is then laminated and given to the student to carry with them to all lessons.

• Explicitly teaching new vocabulary
