Imperialism can have military, political, geographical, and most importantly, economic advantages. This is why strong nations tried to take over weaker countries and regions, mainly in the late 1800s and the early 1900s. When strong nations took over weaker nations, the weaker nations would be used to enrich the stronger nations. Normally, this would happen through the supply of precious metals, timber, rubber, and many other resources.

The weaker nations would be a source of cheap labor. Also, having control of the weaker nation would benefit the imperial power geographically, since the weaker nation might have trading ports and land that could be used for agriculture. The biggest imperial powers before World War I were Great Britain and France. However, other countries such as Russia and Germany wanted to expand. This caused a lot of competition and conflict between the countries, which was one of the causes of World War I.

Nationalism is an important cause of World War l. Nationalism is when you are a strong supporter of the rights and interests of your country or the belief that your country is the best. In order to make your country the best you have to weaken other countries. France was already angry at the loss of Alsace-Lorraine, land they had previously owned, to Germany and wanted to regain their territory. Nationalist sentiments among these countries led to rising tensions, because they would do anything to defend the countries they love and they wanted their country to be the biggest and best. Ultimately leading to war.

Many oppressed slavic groups wanted freedom from Germans and wanted to form their own independent nations. Due to nationalism, they could no longer tolerate having to bow down to Germans and having to speak their language. This led to many nationalist movements and group formations such as a Serbian group called the Black Hand. This group assassinated the heir of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Archduke Franz Ferdinand in protest of their country being ruled under the Austro-Hungarian empire. Eventually Russia, France, and England were willing to support Serbia, while Germany was ready to go war with its ally, the Austro-Hungarian empire. Soon enough, World War I broke out.

The new head of Germany, Wilhelm, became a nationalist of his country, obsessed with military power and imperial expansion. However, as many nationalist are, he was envious of other empires. To Wilhelm, the main obstacle standing in German's expansion was Britain. He thought the British was hypocritical because London oversaw the world’s largest empire yet turned down German colonial expansion in Africa and Asia.

This resulted in Britain becoming a a target in German press right before the war. Britain was seen as expansionist, selfish, and obsessed with money. Which led to the whole country of Germany hating them. Further rising tensions between the two countries and starting the war.

Alliances are a major cause of World War 1. Alliances are a relationship among a group of people that come together for a mutual benefit. After the assassination of Archduke Frantz Ferdinand, Germany, Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria, and the Ottoman Empire made an alliance and were known as the Central Powers. The Central Powers fought against Great Britain, France, Russia, Italy, Romania, Japan and the United States (the Allied Powers). Many alliances with European powers, the Ottoman Empire and Russia had been there for years. However a group called the Balkans (Bosnia, Serbia and Herzegovina) warned that they would destroy these alliances.

After the assassination of Franz Ferdinand many countries blamed Serbia for the attack and wanted to use the attack for justification for stopping Serbian nationalism. Since Russia was aligned with Serbia, Austria-Hungary hesitated to declare war before its officials secured an alliance with Kaiser Wilhelm ii who was a German leader. Austria-Hungary’s main fear was that if Russia was involved then its allies would be too (France and Great Britain). The Serbian government was later convinced that Austria-Hungary was getting prepared for war. As a result of this, the government ordered the Serbian army to move and asked its greatest ally, Russia for help.

Later on July 28, Austria-Hungary attacked Serbia and declared war. This was when the peace between Europe’s great powers got destroyed. It then became a war between the Central Powers (Germany, Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria, and the Ottoman Empire) and the Allied Powers (Great Britain, France, Russia, Italy, Romania, Japan and the United States). After the war ended, it was won by the Allied Powers. There were about 40 million casualties in total after the war. After the war, the military of the Central Powers collapsed.

Militarism contributes a large part to World War 1. Militarism is when the army and military forces are considered higher by the government, this was causing a European divide which was growing faster leading to a race between main countries. In 1906, the British brought the "dreadnought" which became a highly effective battleship then. Germany decided to come up with a plan where they attacked France through Belgium only if Russia decided to attack Germany. German, Von Schlieffen devised this plan. At this point Russia has the largest army and Germany landed in third. In nations that were militaristic, admirals and generals would usually act as "de facto" government officials/ministers. This gave them the role of advising political leaders and influencing a domestic policy.

The early 20th century or in the late 19th, Militarism was the fuel to a race of who could advance technology with weapons the best to make weapons more efficient. The Five major economic powers were; Germany, Austria-Hungry, France, Russia, and Great Britain. If any rival were to threaten them they would immediately win as they possess most of the power. The government was using military power to conquer colonies at this time in order to defend recently gained natural resources. The government and the military worked together to create corporate funds, national growth, and military. The military decided to turn these funds into financial gateways turned away from foreign expansion sent back to their government. Militarism also strengthened the need for self-governing and own business's dependently. Capitalists also supported the idea of governments using military to help them get a hold of foreign resources to beat foreign competitors.

A main question is how did militarism lead to World War 1? Well there was something called the naval and arms race. During the 1900's when the Britain and German started building up their navies, the major power areas in Europe started building up their power hence the name navel and arms race as it was a race to see who has the better force armies or navies. Militarism itself is caused by many reasons. One of the reasons is (the example I gave is what happened in to start World War 1) it happens is because a government sense's a threat from a foreign/weaker nation. They take this threat seriously as they do not want to be knocked down or overtaken, then they form an army of some sorts but yes the other nation has an army. They try to be better then that army by improving and adding all they can to machinery but the other nation seems to be catching up. Eventually they keep doing this trying to overtake the other and this eventually led to World War 1. Another reason is the government builds up political expansion. In World War 1 they thought of Militarism as some sort of a philosophy that shows the importance of military power.

This is a picture of Prussian Militarism. The Kingdom of Prussia(that spoke Greek) is considered the reason European militarism was formed. After the 1971 unification in Germany, Prussia became one of the most powerful kingdoms in all of Greece. The Prussian army was later evolved and modernized. They had strong means of plots and communication. The picture below is an example of Prussian militarists looking east.
