The Elizabethan theatre
- Public theatres:
During the Elizabethan age theatre was becoming very popular. For this reason in 1574 the administration of city of London decided to build a large public theatre. The first theatre was "The Theatre" opened in 1576. These theatres were large, circular, squere and octagonal; open-air in the centre and with covered galleries. There was also some special effects with smoke and fireworks. In the gallery above the stage there was also the Orchestra. Shakespeare's theatre was "The Globe Theatre" it was built in 1599, and it was very similar to "The Swan Theatre". The Globe Theatre was rebuilt in 1997 and now is very similar to the original one which was closed in 1644. Whereas in the Swan Theatre the plays were usually a few hours long and took place in the afternoon: there were no lights, no intervals and no toilets.
- The Audience:
The audience was very noisy: they laughed laudly, made comments sometime bad comments to show their feelings if they didn't like the performance and if they didn't like the performance they used to throw their snacks that they had bought outside the theatre at the actors.

Then Macbeth arrives in the cavern and asks them to tell him the whole secret, but they just says that is a bad thing with no name. There's a clap of thunder and a ghost wearing a helmet appears and recommends Macbeth to pay attention to Macduff. Another thunder echos in the sky and a child ghost covered in blood appears.

The Elizabethan Theatres
-Private Theatres.
Private theatres were also called playhouses. They had comfortable seats for about 300 spectators and they were open all year. The rooms were lit by candles for evening performances and because of this the tickets were five times more expensive than those for public theatres.
-The Plays
There was a lot of competition between theatres and companies changed their plays very often, sometimes even every day, so advertising was very difficult. One technique they used was to put a flag on top of the theatre: a white flag represented a comedy, a red flag for a history play and a black flag for a tragedy.
The most common authors were William Shakespeare, Christopher Marlowe and Ben Jonson and before production, their plays were checked by the City authorities to make sure that they didn't contain any political or religious idea against the State.
-Costumes
In the Elizabethan period, only the upper classes could wear colorful clothes made of expensive materials, such as silk and velvet. Actors were given a special permission: they could wear luxury clothes because each colour had a meaning and everyone could understand what character an actor was representing from his clothes.

-FROM SQUARES TO INNS
In the early 16th century actors travelled around the country performing their plays. They did that in town squares or other public places and at night they stayed in the local inn. Soon they started to performe in the inn courtyard, that was a sort of big hotel with many galleries. That was an advantage for the owner of it because he could attrack more costumers who paid a lot to watch the plays.
-THEATRE COMPANIES AND ACTORS
In the 16th century actors were not well-liked because they were considered vagabonds and the people often thought that they could bring bubonic plague ,which was very frequent at the time. The situation changed when the government gave the licence to the aristocracy to form theatre companies. Later a lot of actors become rich superstars. But acting was not easy: sometimes they had to learn their part in little time. Until 1660 only men could performe plays and so young boys played female parts wearing white make-up
