Headphones and earphones are a pair of small listening devices that are designed to be worn on or around the head over a user's ears. They are electroacoustic transducers, which convert an electrical signal to a corresponding sound in the user's ear. Headphones are designed to allow a single user to listen to an audio source privately, in contrast to a loudspeaker, which emits sound into the open air, for anyone nearby to hear.

What size jackplugs does headphones have?

Earbuds have small jack plugs (usually 3.5 mm or 1/8"), while bigger headphones typically have plugs about twice the size (typically 6.3mm or 1/4"). If you buy cheap earbuds, you won't be able to use them on a big stereo or TV unless you buy an adapter to go with them (those are relatively easy to find online or in hi-fi stores—just type "3.5 mm to 6.3mm headphone adapter" into Google). Conversely, however, most decent audio headphones with 6.3mm plugs come ready-supplied with 3.5mm adapters so you can use them on smaller equipment too.

Open or closed headphones?

Open-backed phones usually sound better to me than closed-back ones, because they let sound move more freely with less distortion inside. If you're buying phones for private home listening in a room where other people will be chattering away or listening to the TV, you may prefer a closed-backed pair. Similarly, if you intend to use your phones on a train, bus, or plane, closed-backed headphones will reduce the background noise you hear and the disturbance you cause to other people—although noise-canceling headphones are generally better for travel use.

How does earphones works

Sound waves are generated by vibrations of a material, which propagates through a medium with compressions and rarefactions.
Now what a earphone does is, it converts electrical signals into sound waves.
The 3 main components of earphones are shown in the above image,

The cone(also called diaphragm) , the voice coil and the permanent magnet.

The outer part of the cone is attached to a circular metal rim, and the inner part is attached to the voice coil. The voice coil is placed next to the permanent magnet.

When you attach the jack to a stereo or a computer etc, the electrical signals pass through the speaker cable,( the wire attached to the jack and the loudspeaker apparatus) and then through the voice coil. This turns the coil in to a electromagnet.

Due to the alternating current, the polarity of the coil is changed continuously and thus it is repelled and attracted by the permanent magnet alternatively. This attraction and repulsion moves the coil, which in turn vibrates the cone which produces the sound we hear.

The volume or the loudness depends on the distance the cone vibrates. For a loud sound, the cone vibrates a large distance, and for a quiet sound the cone vibrates a lower distance. This distance is controlled by the electricity. When you turn up the volume on your device, it sends a bigger pulse of electricity and the cone vibrates a large distance and produces more loudness and vice versa.

This apparatus when shrunk and fit into a small ear sized casing ,it is called earphones.
