Now what a earphone does is, it converts electrical signals into sound waves.
The 3 main components of earphones are shown in the above image,

• The cone(also called diaphragm) , the voice coil and the permanent magnet.
• The outer part of the cone is attached to a circular metal rim, and the inner part is attached to the voice coil. The voice coil is placed next to the permanent magnet.
• When you attach the jack to a stereo or a computer etc, the electrical signals pass through the speaker cable,( the wire attached to the jack and the loudspeaker apparatus) and then through the voice coil. This turns the coil in to a electromagnet.
• Due to the alternating current, the polarity of the coil is changed continuously and thus it is repelled and attracted by the permanent magnet alternatively. This attraction and repulsion moves the coil, which in turn vibrates the cone which produces the sound we hear.
• The volume or the loudness depends on the distance the cone vibrates. For a loud sound, the cone vibrates a large distance, and for a quiet sound the cone vibrates a lower distance. This distance is controlled by the electricity. When you turn up the volume on your device, it sends a bigger pulse of electricity and the cone vibrates a large distance and produces more loudness and vice versa.

This apparatus when shrunk and fit into a small ear sized casing ,it is called earphones.
