On December 7, 1941 within one hour and fifteen minutes, the Japanese launched an attack on American naval base Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. The Japanese caught the US by surprise with a strike force of 353 aircrafts, dealing a heavy blow to the US with 2,403 U.S. personnel dead, including 68 civilians, and destroyed or damaged 19 U.S. Navy ships, including 8 battleships.

This date is important because it forced the United States away from their indirect position within the war. The Japanese attack led to the US actively joining the war the next day by FDR declaring war on Japan on December 8th and the rest of the axis powers declaring war on the US on December 11th. This date is different from typical markers during WWII because it is an overlooked date that signifies a turning point within the war with the American involvement.

April 3, 1948 Marshall Plan

At the end of WWII President Truman signed the Economic Recovery Act known as the Marshall Plan which was put in order to help Europe and provide economic assistance to restore postwar Europe. After the war Europe was far from it's prewar state, over the following four years $13.3 billion was given to Europe for recovery, which provided them with materials to help rebuild.

This is important in American history as it helped provide a market for American goods, created trading partners, and it helped the relationship between European nations and the US. This is different from other historical dates because it is an instance where the US is helping in international economic recovery, but it also had other intentions in stopping the spread of communism too.

Terrorist attacks of 9/11

On 9/11 terrorists affiliated with al-Qaeda, hijacked 4 planes committing suicide attacks on different locations in the US.

Terrorists swearing death to all Americans flew 2 planes into the Twin Towers, one plane into each, then another plane into the Pentagon, and then a fourth aiming for the White House, but brave passengers struggled against the hijacker to throw off the target.

9/11 is an important date because it revolutionized foreign security and security within airports adding TSA. This also brought stigma towards the Arabic community in society. 9/11 separates itself from other dates because it is a time when America was shown at their weakest with an internal attack, but it also showed the strength of the US as it was able to bounce back quickly.

April 30, 1803 Louisiana Purchase

This was a transaction between the US and the French, where the US obtained the port of New Orleans and the Louisiana territory in the west. France was losing interest in establishing a frontier in North America, and needed money to fund the war with the British, so they quickly sold their western territory for a bargain, with the US. This was important because it doubled the size of the US and expanded it giving access to newer resources and more farming space. This date is different from other important American dates because it is usually not shown enough recognition. The expansion of the country brought along many different consequences both negative and positive with the introduction of gold mining and the eventual conflict of slave states vs. free states.

November 22, 1963 Assassination of JFK

While in a motorcade in Dealey Plaza, Texas, Kennedy was shot by suspect Lee Harvey Oswald with a sniper, and deemed dead at the hospital. It was a shocking moment for America as it was broadcasted live on television for all of America to see. After his death Lyndon Johnson took over as the next president, but this brought a constitutional change as there was no proper way to carry out a transition like this written out in the Constitution. This date was important because it brought the 25th amendment which made it clear that the Vice President became President when the presidency became vacant under three circumstances: death, resignation, and removal from office. This date is different as it is one of the few presidential assassinations and it shows the consequences of one of the assassinations.
