Students will select a topic related to a social issue. Students will conduct research and develop an infographic to inform others about both sides of the selected topic. In the second half of unit, students will use their own infographic or their peers' infographics to develop an opinion about one of the selected topics. Students will have the opportunity to conduct further research about their selected topic if necessary. In the culminating event, students will take a stand in order to express their opinion about a selected topic and support it with evidence and information from multiple texts. To do so, students will have a choice of expressing their opinion in a blog, podcast or screencast. Due to the informational focus in this project-based unit, there will be no literary extended text assigned in this unit. However, suggestions for independent reading related to the unit theme, essential questions and standards are provided below. Students may choose to interact with extended literary texts in their independent reading. At their discretion, teachers can include the reading of any relevant grade-level appropriate literary or informational texts to support meaningful independent work.
