This technique demonstrates the essential question about childhood as when a person have to deal with so many traumatic events in life, with all of the people dying because of the war, whether it around the people who was close to her or not, she feels sick just thinking that all of these tragedy could of been avoided. This shows that she is forced to grow up quickly, because as she is thinking about these kinds of things she has to stay strong and make sense of it all-and that takes deep thinking only an adult would have. Thus, it is clear that she is forced to grow up.

Graphic Novel Element: In this picture, the big clouds of smoke resulted from the bombing is much larger than everything else. It draws attention to the war, and thus help us understand why Marjane has to grow up and be strong because everyday there are so many people dying.

This technique help answer the essential question about belief in god helps her to form her beliefs. The events that have happened in her life helps influence her belief that god sented her to fix the bad things around the world. Such as bring justice, love and strong to fight for her rights, show love for others.

 Graphic Novel Element: From left to right Marjane’s facial expression is getting more and more serious, as the last face is angry yet determined to care out her task. Her face help created a sense of her determination and her attitudes towards being a prophet. Which this idea came from her belief in God and her believing that she is the chosen one.

This elements helps answer the questions about how people form their belief. This picture illustrates the young kids’ illusions and hope of a new and better way of life through the promises give by the Shah, and the only way they can get into the kingdom of god if they go to war and die. It also shows that people’s belief can be influenced by teachers and classmates in school. As that is the place where he was told this and attain the key.

Graphic Novel Element: We can see by the expressions and the hand prints on Marjane and the maids face, that they feel sad and ashamed to have been reprimanded and hit by Marji’s mother, for just standing up what they believe in. They also look a little confused as to why they were hit for doing what her mother does, and for standing up for what they believe. Also the handprint in there faces is black, which really highlights it and shows that they can still feel it, and they are still ashamed of it, and aware that it is there. 

Graphic elements: Black/White coloring

In the panel it shows two sides of Marjane. The left side shows what her family represents and the right side represents her religious side. The black and white colors show you the difference between the two sides and make it easy to tell the two sides apart.

Graphic Novel Element: The graphic Element used here is shading, the cigarette Marji’s mother is smoking is white compared to the black background. It is supposed to really stick out and make it clear the she is smoking. We know that she is less stressed when she smokes so it is in white to emphasize it, and show that it is important and it helps her keep the dark away.

The Shah leaves the country and many are very happy to see him leave. They have a party to celebrate the end of the Shah. The way they formed their beliefs were by the things the Shah did and the things he made them do. He made women wear veils and put many men in prison. 

Graphic element: faces

Everyone shown in this panel has a happy face. They are very excited that the Shah is gone and their faces show that. The faces in the panel make it easy to tell how the people are feeling. The graphic also makes it easy to tell their emotions.

Marjane wanted to have a hero in her family and she found that with Anoosh. Anoosh was a prisoner and had been in the U.S.S.R. and she thought that was really cool. While people are growing into adulthood I think the adults in your life affect you the most. They can teach you certain things others can't. Also many children look up to adults and some strive to be like them when they get older. 

Graphic element: speech bubbles

Anoosh is telling marjane how he swam across the aras river and made it to the U.S.S.R. And she thinks he's amazing. Marjane's speech bubble has two bubbles which means she is saying it in her head instead of saying it out loud. 

Graphic Novel Element: The Element that we see here is graphic weight, the veils the women are wearing are black and catch our eye. We can see Marji’s option on the veil, because she draws them in black. She makes them seem terrible and dark, and like they cover everything up that makes girls individual. By shading the veils in dark she  shows that she has taken her options for what she sees, and not what the teacher tells her.

The panel shows the city of Tehran that is deserted because a lot of people have fled due to the bombardments. The protagonist is trying to live there normally, even if this seems impossible, since everything in her life is changing because of the war. However, Marjane doesn’t give up and she manages to continue is everyday life.

The contrast between the black shaded trees and the white road is really evident. This increases the sense of desolation in the city, that appears abandoned.

This picture shows Marjane taking part in her first party. While the country is fighting in a war and the leaders are convincing young kids to join the conflict, she is trying to live freely, because she has understood that this war is unnecessary and could have been avoided. Thus Marjane doesn’t want her life to be influenced by that, but she wants to be only a normal teenager.

Both Marjane and the kids in the background are dancing and having fun: you can tell it because they are shaking their hands and legs. Thus, even though bad things happen during a war period, as the kids demonstrate, you can always find a way to escape.

Marjane is going to leave Iran, continuing her life in Europe. She is afraid of what she will face in a different country, because she is only fourteen years old; in addition she has never left her own nation. Thus she knows that from now on she will have to get by herself, because she is not a child anymore.

The insecure face of Marjane expresses all of her fears about going abroad, and living far from her family. Behind her, even her parents’ facial expression appears disconsolate for the departure of their daughter.
