RECAP / NEW EARTH EXPO

I don’t mean to start off on a negative note, but this semester probably was the hardest one of the last 4 years. Despite that, I am still happy I was able to join the exposition today.

Even though I haven’t written it in my blog or anywhere else, the past few weeks I have reflected a lot. Especially since it was such a difficult and slow process throughout this minor.

To be honest, this was the first project I have done that was so strongly based on research. Which is partly the reason why I struggled a lot. Filtering all the research and converting it into a creative process I think was the hardest part. Within my major - spatial design - all projects where very conceptual and not a lot of research was required or asked from us.

Next to that, as I have mentioned before, this has been a difficult year. Dealing with private circumstances and not being able to start up a creative process was very hard and something I haven’t really had to deal with like I have the past few weeks. I probably could have done a lot of things differently, but in the end I am satisfied with what I was able to do in the amount of time I still had left. This semester was quite a learning experience and I will take this into account as I move towards graduation.

At last, I had a fun experience during the expo today and I am thankful for being able to join in the end.

From the feedback on the Future Food Hub concept, I have taken several points that need attention and turned them into actions that need to be taken to bring the project a step further. Because I got lost in the whole process of translating research into a project, I couldn’t decide wether I wanted to design a system or make a design for the system. What I’ve realised is that I want to focus on the design aspect, instead of designing a whole (food) system. The first step I’m taking is reviewing the research I’ve collected with a fresh eye and draw conclusions from there.

Now the question I'm asking myself more consciously is how - as a spatial designer - I can contribute to creating a more sustainable food system, instead of trying to solve the entire problem.

To do:

Review research

Conclusions

Location: yes/no?

Translation to design

Form studies

Final form

Presentation/communication medium

Involve stakeholders

For the past week I have been busy trying to rethink/reframe my initial concept, research and ideas I've had about this project.
Rereading my research was usefull, but also frustrating. Because I keep finding myself wanting to solve a problem. I'm now trying to stop asking the question of how we can design or shape a sustainable food system into the urban environment or how I can achieve that with my project.

Meanwhile, I have been asked the following questions by everyone around me:
"How is school going?"
"What project are you doing?"
"What is your project about?"

Most of the time when I try to explain, people aren't very familiar with the concept of vertical farming (in my surroundings at least). Also, often people aren't aware of the fact that we'll have to feed almost 10 billion people by 2050 and what needs to happen to be able to do that.
This led me to think about a different angle of approach, more so to raise awareness and create something where people can become acquainted with the concept of modern/future food production.

I'm still figuring out how this could translate into a project/design, but it could be a kind of installation or exhibition type experience where the vertical farming concept is incorporated or displayed/introduced. Maybe it could be ephemeral, so that it can be showcased at different locations like events, festivals or exhibitions?

I think it is also important that it shows the importance of the transition we need to make towards new ways of producing foods.

These are just some initial thoughts. To be continued..

Using vacant (retail) spaces throughout the city to showcase what these companies do.
The idea is to try and use vacant spaces instead of empty office buildings to put emphasis on street level visibility. Also because a lot of vertical farming projects in empty office buildings already have been done.

I have managed to narrow down the points of focus for this project.

Before, I tried to combine all aspects surrounding the unsustainable global food system into one concept. Trying to solve the problem of having to feed over populated cities, incorporating food production transparency, changing the system for it, adding the concept of vertical farming, while also trying to spatially design all of this into the cities public space to somehow also create a human social connection with food production.
Looking at the list of "solutions" above, of course this was a mission impossible.

For now, the problem I'm adressing is what Carolyn Steel refers to as the 'urban paradox':
- City and agriculture exist as two seperate worlds, with agriculture being the invisible counterpart of the city.
- We think about city dwelling as the way of living now and in the future, but the more we cluster ourselves into the city, the further away we get from recognising the origin of our food. We do this and still dare to call ourselves "natural beings".

How can we shape the city into an organic entity?

This I'm translating to the idea of using smaller scale, vacant spaces in the city.

I'm well aware that this will not be sufficient space to feed millions of people, but I have to start somewhere.
