When the lines "I can't keep my baby? All 'cause of Alyssa?...A dam opens and I realize what the sensation is. Hot tears, dripping down my face,..." gives the reader a side of Mary we haven't seen. When she says "all 'cause of Alyssa?" it breaks something within her and she starts to cry in all of the years after Alyssa's death, which she never done, she expresses a side of her that really wants dreams and beliefs. With words like "hot" and dripping" that represent diction within the story. She never thought that the price of taking the blame to Alyssa's death is going stop her from keeping her baby;she never really realized all the consequences that would come when she let everyone think she killed Alyssa.

My baby,my Alyssa, they want to take her away from me."
This is important because through out the book Mary wanted people to think she doesn't care for anyone. My heart sinks to my feet. 'Pesky little thing'.." (pg 77)

The author added this part as a way of wrapping back to the fly motif in the beginning chapters. In earlier pages, Mary says something along the lines of "How is this fly surviving in here and not me". On page 77, Herbert is finally killed by her mom who Mary describes as evil, diabolical, etc. This part of the chapter was made to show the only thing in the house that Mary related to, is gone because of her mother.

Herbert is a smudge of legs and wings plastered to the wall. My heart sinks to my feet. "pesky little thing" she mumbles throwing the magazine away." (johnson 77) The author included this quote because here it shows how when she confronted her mom about telling them "the actual plan." her mother then killed herbert the fly. In this quote it showed how herbert represented her. he was more than a fly, by her mother killing him , everything mary has felt about her has definitely advanced and came to life.
