I have many biases that I have to hold myself accountable to daily. My biases come from historical, political, emotional, generalizations, fear - their are so many that I encounter that I often say "oh, did you hear that? That is my biases speaking - let me reframe that and reflect on why that holds a space in my present life."

I work with students with learning disabilities, that do not need to disclose their differences. This in itself is a form of UDL. Jumping on the PD bandwagon from this mornings' PD, our students began to give their pronouns, as well as changed their names 2 years ago (in their D2L account), which I think is pretty awesome!

Just an easy conversation can be a great start.

Some biases that I never really thought about before this but can certainly come into play: personal connections to players/parents, previous coaching experience, previous coach feedback, playing history (where did they play before i.e. B level team vs AAA--not always tied to ability), geography (small town player vs big city), physical attributes, familiarity with geographic area calibre of baseball talent, equipment (new vs old), etc.

Many of my roles include students, staff, faculty members, community partners, families etc. and I must always consider EDIB in my role as an educator, mentor, presenter etc.

I sometimes have a difficult time seeing through a lens other than my own.

The biggest thing is to recognize those biases and simply try to evaluate and recruit players on sheer talent and potential ability alone.

Really work on consciously using non-ableist and inclusive language. I find it difficult to sometimes communicate clearly, but I think I may just need to think and respond with more thoughtfulness

Assumptions regarding level of English language literacy: international students vs domestic students; surprise...they are not as different as I assumed.

Determining use of GenAI when they have been instructed not to use it; I assumed international students would use it more to create their responses/work because of assumed language challenges. While there is clearly some us in this regard, I've learned that perceptions about whether students should be allowed to use it vary and the actual use of it varies (eg., used to 'fine-tune' original work).

I feel that PD, holding myself accountable by listening to my inner biases and challenging those notions - reflecting on them and when I know better, I do better.

I'm not sure??? This is really tricky for me. At the end of the day, the only thing that matters when recruiting and selecting ballplayers is talent and their ability to be a great teammate.

I have been exploring bias in my teaching for a few years now. I sometimes will even stop mid sentance and say " wow that is a biased statement" and then turn it into a teaching moment. I think it is important to remember that we all have biases that we are not necicerally aware of and that we acknowlege them and learn and grow.

I intentionally use gender neutral pronouns, include different ethnicities/abilities in PP and create workshops for educator that discuss EDIB - We, the staff I work with, hold each other accountable as well and we openly discuss our biases and confront them.

I start my course with an inclusivity statement. As part of the statement I emphasize that I am learning and that I encourage students to bring to my attention where I can make my class more inclusive.
