 The certification function is a critical aspect of professional quality assurance in midwifery. Nurse-midwives have been certified by examination since 1971.   The difference between certified midwives and certified nurse midwives is that the nurse midwife is usually a registered nurse that gains a license in all 50 states. Certified midwives and certified professional midwives have limited access to a few states.
