I went to Purdue to become a Pharmacist. I was a first generation college student and only met with my high school guidance counselor once a year where she would ask me "Do you still want to take these classes you picked out for yourself when you were in 8th grade next year?" Of course I wanted to take the cooking classes over AP Physics, so I said yes and moved along. At Purdue, I quickly realized I did not enjoy anything about the journey it was going to take to become a Pharmacist. I had an amazing advisor there who had me take some interest inventories and personality assessments and when she read me the results she did it with such profoundness that I started crying with how "seen" she made me feel. Not only did I want to be like Ms. Rita someday, but she confirmed that my test results were leading to an advising/counseling career field as well. Now here I am, hoping I can prevent students from making the same mistakes I did.

It's a Journey

College is definitely a journey and there's no one right way to do it. Mine is definitely an adventure. I started out going to college right after high school in 2005. For my first 2 years I attended and graduated from Wabash Valley College (Jr college). Then I transferred to McKendree University. Due to a lot of things going on I took a year off after McKendree and got one of my struggle classes out of the way by taking it at SWIC (another Jr. College) during that time. After my year off I attended Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. During my time there I took another year off when I had my oldest son and went back in 2013 and graduated in 2014 with my undergraduate degree in Biology with a focus in pre-veterinary medicine and a minor in chemistry. After graduation I began working at a veterinary office in Evansville, IN to get more experience before attempting to apply to veterinary school. During that time I became pregnant with my second son and wanted a job where I got more time with both of my kids. I began substitute teaching and fell in love with sharing my love of science with students. So I went back to school in the fall of 2015 and graduated in 2017 with my Masters in teaching from Oakland City University. And now here I am LOL!

Goodness! Where have I not been to college...
I started in 2002 at Ivy Tech where I met my husband. Got the basic credits out of the way. Transferred to Vincennes University where I got my Associate's degree in American Sign Language on the deaf school campus. Went to I.U.P.U.I and then decided that I did not, in fact want to be an ASL interpreter. I did want to finish a degree and I had many linguistics courses so I majored in English Literature and Applied Writing. Went out into the job force and ended up wanting to do something different. SO... I went BACK to Marian University in 2017 for my Transition to Teach License and now I have been at INDLS for 3 years. You may find it is never a straight line to where you want to be and that is ok! 😊 It took me a bit longer to finish every step because I was working full time while doing each program.

Here is my story: I graduated first trimester my senior year (Nov. 18, 2005), I hated high school and wanted out ASAP. After my son was born, I tried going back to school, but I was a single parent, and I was so tired, so I stopped after a month because I had no one to support me. My parent's said college was a waste of time and money (if someone ever says that to you... don't listen). When my son was a little older, I tried again but he got sick and again I gave up. After my grandmother retired, she told me to go back to school and she would help with my son, but I had completely given up at that point. PS worst decision ever!

My grandma passed away in January of 2018 and my son said, "okay mom it's time to go back to school. I want you to and Grandma Barbara wanted you to. You can do it!" So, I found an online program (because I am not an in-person school kind of person) at Grace College and Theological Seminary in Winona Lake, IN and got to work on my Associate of Science in Liberal Arts. Then I moved on to my Bachelor of Science in Human Services. BTW I despise Statistics class it ruined my perfect GPA.

Then my son talked me in to applying at INDLS as a substitute teacher ;) and now I am back in college at Taylor University completing their online Transition to Teaching program for Secondary Education. School isn't so bad :)

I made it through college because eventually someone believed in me enough, oh and I let go of my pride and accepted ADA accommodations because I needed them.

You can do whatever you want if you just believe in yourself! <3

Kicked him to the curb and found a better one that I married! Took some science classes at Brevard Community College in Florida- wanted to be a veterinarian. Moved back to Indiana. Changed my mind and decided I wanted to be a parent, so we tried for a family, had two. Became a foster family, then an adoptive family, kids 3 & 4 joined. I was always teaching at home. I have had quite the journey in college. I do have to say it is completely work it though. I received my undergraduate in Psychology at ISU in 2014. I went from there straight into the mental health field which I worked for almost 6 years. I decided a couple years into working in mental health that I wanted to be a teacher. Teaching is very rewarding and I greatly enjoy every minute of it. I received my teaching degree from Taylor University. At ISU I was mostly in person and took a few online courses. I enjoyed both. I completed all my Taylor courses online. I can definitely see the benefits of taking online classes. I also understand that college is not for everyone.

I attended UofE from 1996-2000. I earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science and Business Adminstration. I thought my journey was going to give me a big government job, or I would be an awesome lawyer...but my journey changed. I loved my years at UofE, it gave me the oppourtunity to travel to Europe, and many other amazing experiences. When my journey changed, I went to the College of Mount St. Joseph in Cincinnati, OH in 2002 and began my "Education Journey" It took some time because I could only go part-time and still had to "Adult" in the real world. I was licensed as a teacher by 2005, but didn't start teaching until 2007 (a little detour), and I received my Masters of Education in 2008 during my first year (2007-2008) teaching. I am in my 16th year of teaching now, and my 6th year hear at INDLS...It's been an interesting journey!

I went to Grace College by Winona Lake in northern Indiana, and I've got to tell you, it was awesome! I met life-long friends, professors who sharpened my thinking, and a beautiful woman who is now my wife! It wasn't easy: there were many late nights, projects, and study sessions. But boy, I am glad I went! College was one of the best chapters of my life. When I graduated in 2020 with my bachelor's degree in History and Social Studies Education, I was ready to move on but oh so thankful for my time there. College isn't for everyone, but it can be a wonderful experience and help you achieve your goals - for me, teaching! :)

It's NEVER too late to reinvent yourself!

My first college experience was at The Ohio State University. GO BUCKS! I moved into a 23 floor dorm the day after I turned 18, and 4 years later I graduated with my Bachelor's of Science in Dental Hygiene. I practiced as a dental hygienist for almost 14 years, but took a couple years off to raise my 2 boys when they were very young.

When I was 36, I decided to head back to school to get my education degree. This was a decision a long time in the making. My oldest son was diagnosed with autism at 6 and that began my journey with understanding special education. I worked as a paraprofessional in a life skills class for 3 years before heading back to school. I went through college for the 2nd time all while raising a blended family of 7. It was not easy, but it was worth it. I graduated in 2016 from Indiana University East with my Bachelor of Arts degree in elementary. education with a focus on Special Education. I have been teaching special education ever since.

Fast forward to this photo, I had earned my first masters degree in Curriculum & Instruction fully online! I originally studied to be a band director at Ball State University, and I went through a lot of changes my junior year. Eventually I graduated with a music degree and a minor in history. I ended up falling in love with teaching history, but didn't have the money to go straight back to college for another go, so instead I started working at my local factory.

I turned my focus towards building a relationship with my local schools, first working as a substitute teacher and custodian, and then becoming an IT specialist.

After 6 years of working in the IT field within education, I finally decided it was time to finish my degree in history at Indiana Wesleyan University. Since then I am still heavily involved in music, but I'm teaching social studies and loving every second of it!

I've learned that our paths forward are seldom straight. It takes time, and a lot of ups and downs and curves to get where we want to be in life. Never give up, and enjoy each moment!

I received my undergrad degree from the University of Indianapolis. After having children, I decided to get my Special Education License from Indiana Wesleyan. I received my Master's Degree in Special Education from Ball State and finally received my Intense Special Education License from Purdue. I loved my online classes from Ball State and Purdue and am glad to be teaching online at INDLS.

I attended Ball State University where I received my Bachelor's of Science in Psychology and Human Development. I also met my husband there! I then attended the teacher training program at the University of Colorado in Denver!

I got my Bachelor's of Science from Purdue University. I majored in agricultural communications. I'm a HUGE Purdue sports fan, especially Purdue Men's Basketball!

I originally attended Columbia College Chicago, obtaining a degree in Fashion Merchandising, however life happened. A few weeks in I learned I was pregnant with my son Noah. I transferred to IUN shortly after and after discussions with my teachers from high school I knew teaching was my destiny. Attending college, raising a baby, being a wife, all while working fulltime was a struggle but I did it! Everyone at IUN supported me in my journey. I am proud to say I am a first gen college graduate as of May 2023.
