108 maybe all hope is lost

In the book, Helen and Siegfried were on a trip on a train. During the trip, no one was given any food or water. People had to stand for the whole trip and when the train stopped, those on board could not use the restroom, or stretch their legs. However, soldiers came on the train car taking money, fountain pens, and watches. On the trip, Siegfried told her that he thinks he wont be able to live through it. He will lose hope. I chose this quote because I feel like a lot of kids my age feel the same way Siegfried does. They don't think they could or will ever live a “normal” life. Many have given up hope and that isn't to say they aren't trying its just that some things are to hard for people to bear.

In the story, Heck and his troop took over a school for camp. Only one teacher spoke out against it. Heck says, 'Throw this man out, if he comes back, shoot him'. Heck and his boys are harsh and tough; the villagers know that now. The paragraph talks about how the boys were brought up, fighting for Germany, knowing that their Fatherland needed them. I chose this page because I think it does a great explanation of what the children felt towards Hitler. I feel like even today we have people that we have never met but still think very highly of and would do anything for them. I think social media has a big influence on that. Making it seem as though one is part of another life, being a part of every moment. #wordsandactionshavepower

117 Hitler outside of the Holocaust

Hitler has always been someone of intrest to me. Him being a "evil mastermind" yet making people believe what he was doing was good. In the paragraph, they explain that Hitler trusted no one; not even his most loyal supporters, the Hitler Youth. I think this shows the complexity of Hitler's brain. While reading I took a moment and read over the sentences a few times. I love looking at media that shows Hitler doing good, being a real human, flirting the the photographer, meeting children in hospitals. It shows that there are many sides to people. I wonder if Hitler grew up in this time period and saw what he did, what he would think about it. Would he still believe that he was superior? That's Jews were all evil? In this passage, Hitler talks about him almost being assassinated, how he trusts no one, and that he is unharmed. He killed thousands that were suspected to be a part of the plan to murder him.

Stauffenberg created a group to assassinate Hitler. They had many opportunities but each failed. Every time something would stop them last minute. They have been planned for months. Finally, during a meeting, a bomb went off. Some died and got injured from the blast but Hitler was unharmed. I found this very interesting because Hitler knew nothing of the plan. Was it fate or destiny that Hitler was to commit suicide instead of be put into the hands of another being?#standupandresist

Hitler gave many speeches to the Hitler Youth. He spoke directly to them, influencing their every move. Hitler again, made a very smart move, making his ancestors so loyal. When Heck met Hitler and had some words spoken directly to him, Heck made sure to serve his Fatherland, to serve Hitler, as much as he could. I chose this quote because I was really intrigued and hooked with this section. That moment was very important to Heck and the author made sure to convey just that. When Hitler talked to Heck, he sounded almost like a sports coach. Saying things like 'I can depend on you'. If Heck didn't meet Hitler that night I feel like he would have made other decisions which might have gotten himself killed. #youthhaspower

While Helen was in Auschwitz, she had a dream where she returned home to Amsterdam. Everyone she loved was there. When she told them what happened they didn't believe her. Saying that she lost her mind and was crazy. Helen was very shaken by this. She could not believe no one would believe her in her dream. I chose this quote because I love how the author worded it and that they thought to include it. People are trying to make the Holocaust seem as if it was not a real event, like it was all staged. I felt like a part of the book after reading that paragraph and had a sudden urge to tell not just my story, but the story of so many others. No ones story should be forgotten, or swept aside, or deemed unreal because of how horrific it was. #believe #listen

The treatment of the Jews were despicable in Auschwitz. One couldn't go to the bathroom, could not move, nor drink. Helen talks about how she tried to keep herself clean while at the camp, keeping a little bit of dignity. Later on in the book she loses it completely, wearing the same dress for months and having never-ending lice. I know many people in poverty today have to go great lengths to try and keep themselves clean. Without access to a shower or other necessities, they became very creative but also since they couldn't be clean, may feel like they aren't important enough to care for, just like how Helen did. Also, Women in the camps were to kneel on gravel ground, on their bare knees, for hours during roll call. They could not do anything while this happened. This reminded me of another book I read where the mother had her daughter kneel of rice as a punishment. Though it was not nearly as rough physically for the girl, it was so mentally draining. #dontkneelonhardthingsthathurt

Thought his life, Heck has gotten plenty of advice from very powerful men. One of the most important in my opinion is when he is told to chose life over dying for Hitler. However, during the end of the war, Hitler announced that those who have died for the Fatherland will be decent and brave. Those who did not fight to their fullest, who weren't wounded, have sacrificed their honor. Heck took these words and repeated them in his head like a record player. He heard the words of Hitler in his ear all throughout his mission at Spang. I chose this quote because I can relate to Heck getting many different ideas placed into his head. Sometimes, you won't know which to follow. Luckily, mine are not life or death situations. #gladimnotinawar

It took forever for HEck to finally accept that Germany lost the war. It took a mcuh longer time for him to accept what they did to the Jews and others. I still wonder if he fully understands the hurt he brought them. Until the very end, Heck remained loyal to Hitler. Proclaiming Hitler as his god. Always right and glorious. I chose this quote because I loved the meaning and the emotion that came with the dialogue. He seemed to almost be at peace, talking to Monika about how it was fun while it lasted. When he said "Heil Hitler!" my heart dropped. I hope he doesn't think that way now. But the next line says he never said those words again. I felt a sense of dread for Heck. The war was his glory days, and it is all over.

Heck’s home was destroyed in a bombing on Christmas Eve. 69 people have died in the bombing. Fires were burning for days straight, winter caused water lines to freeze, and 120 homes were destroyed in Wittlich. I chose this quote because i found it very impactful that the book showed that not only were the Jews hurt, but also Germans. I feel like we only hear from one side of the Holocaust, the Jews in the concentration camps. In this book we get to here about Hitler Youth and how the German citizens were hurt in the war. #everyonewashurt
